Scratch built deck light casings for miniature bulbs
« on: September 27, 2007, 02:45:09 am »

Made from a piece of styrene strip cut slightly bigger than the grain of wheat bulb, edges filed round then lightly sanded smooth. Four holes drilled straight through the styrene, insert the grain of wheat bulb and then start inserting and bending the wire around the bulb, glue the wire in the plastic to seal in the bulb. Last of all with a fine brush paint the brass in satin or matt black.....job done!

Hi,
For opaque or coloured lights try the bubble packaging on tablet packs.

I made the deck lights for my 1/12th scale Tyne Class Lifeboat using the packaging tube for electronic switches and tiny lights from the 'everything a pound shop' (20x12v multi coloured bulbs in the string!).

I have just made some lights for the mast of my Bulldog.

I used brass tube, with a I/D of 3.2mm - just big enough to get a grain of wheat bulb inside. Filed just over half way through the tube , then cut off to size, and that was 8.5mm long, filed a small flat on both the light, and the mast.

I had three to solder to the mast, tricky to line them up, and have them all facing to the front.
Eventually solved the problem by threading them onto a bamboo kebab stick, that held them nicely in place whilst my fingers were out of the way - soldering was a doddle.

Just had some G.O.R. bulbs from Squires, they will fit into easily into a 2.00mm I/D tube
