Ham class - rubbing strake - ideas
« on: November 17, 2019, 10:14:47 am »

Hi,
Been wondering the best option to manufacture a rubbing strake for a HAM class as per the picture, any ideas?
Runs nearly the whole length of the hull.

A softwood plank can bend in both directions. I would start at the bow, having shaped the front end of the rubbing strake. Pin and glue the first few inches and let it dry. Then the next few inches, dry, repeat. Finally trim to length, shape and glue the stern end. I am sure that there are other ways

I did something similar quite a while ago, pretty much as Tiger said. I used mahogany mouldings from a diy store. The only thing I did different was that after steaming and shaping the wood, I let it dry and then sanded and sealed the wood before glueing it to the hull. This was in case I was heavy handed when sanding the strip after glueing it on, I might have left sanding gouges on the hull side. That was another mistake I once made.

What you should really use and is in fact far far superior to pine which in fact has a tendancy to crack is Obeche....this is so so easy to use nad work and WILL bend very easily...just use dit this morning in fact on some stringers on a Raf Rescue Launch when in FACT i grabbed some pine ramin by mistake and it split halfway round the chine...guess what Obeche didnt.....Worked for Me

Run both sides of a board edge with a 1/4 round router blade, then cut the half round away using a table saw.
Or use a sander to accomplish the same half round profile, and then again, use the table saw to cut it away from your board.
.
 :-))
Depending on the dimension, Raboesh, Evergreen, or Plastruct make half round stock in plastic.
