No work yesterday  :}   and the wife went Christmas shopping with her daughter so I managed to get a few hours on the Mersey. Started work on the front of the superstructure, where the rope lockers etc are situated, the apertures for the fire hydrants have been cut out and boxed in. The front wall, window sill and windows have also been added to the cabin.

The trim stabs have been made ready for fitting.

The main air intakes that go inside the cabin have also been made.

Sorry about the typo in last post. Was meant to read " trim tabs " and not " trim stabs " :embarrassed:

The front of the superstructure has now been finished and the holes for the rope lockers and survivors cabin have been cut out.

It's now beginning to look like a lifeboat. All the major structures have now been completed and now it's onto the part I like best. The detailing.

The engine covers and the flange for the survivors cabin hatch have been fitted. The hatches have been finished off and the watertight doors made just need to he 'hardware' fitting.

I have now started ' fitting out ' the interior. The watertight door that leads from the main cabin down to the survivors cabin has been made and fitted. The helm's and radar operators panels have also been made and exhaust ducts that wereade earlier have also been fitted.

The internal fitting out has continued with the cable trunking fitted. The fuel filler boxes fitted and ' plumbed ' at the rear. The exhaust ducts have been extended as when I was looking at some photos the ones I had made were too short. The air intakes and the led's for the deck lights have been fitted to the outside of the cabin. The corresponding internal vents have been fitted , a degree of modellers licence has been used here as I couldn't find any good pictures of the real boat, I think it looks ok.

Thanks Dave. This is all Neil's fault  %% . It was whilst I was talking to him ,a last year's Blackpool show ,as to which model to tackle next and recommend the Mersey from Mountfleet Models. And the rest is history.
Anyway on with the build. The rear two seat bases and the steps that lead down from the deck have been made. All have been left loose so they can be painted off the boat.

I've been contemplating for a while how to make the seats for the cabin as I couldn't find any commercially available ones the correct size/shape as I need. When I was reading gribeauval's Mersey build blog I saw he cast the seat bases and backs from resin. I have never done any casting before and it was while I was searching the internet that I found how to make moulds using silicone sealant and baking powder. The blanks were modified from a seat i pick up at a show somewhere. And I cast the seats using resin from a fibreglass starter kit I had. The results came out better than I thought they would ( the moulds are a bit 'Heath Robinson') but once the bases/backs are cleaned up I think they will look ok.

Started making the chairs for the cabin over Christmas the first pictures show the one for the radar operator including height adjustment pedal and reach knob.

The next set of pictures are of the coxswain's chair which has an under seat fire extinguisher (which was scratch built) as well as reach adjustment knob and height adjustment pedal.

The final pictures are of one of the seat lockers that hold pyrotechnics etc.

All the major bits (seats, foot lockers, bench and navigators table) for the inside of the cabin have now been made ready for painting. The following pictures show their placement.

And last but not least the most important pieces of equipment on the boat.

The tea mashing equipment 😁

Started detailing the outside of the cabin. First was the cabin fresh air vents and intakes.

One of the units in situ.

A view from inside the cabin.

I have started work on detailing the flying bridge. Various inspection panels and instrument panel bases have been added.

The hatch cover has been made and the none slip checker plate floor added.

The watertight door has also been made and detailed with locking bolts and handles.

The door has working hinges and lock. So the door can be left open when on display or closed and locked when being sailed.

The springs that keep the door closed will be added after painting.

Thanks Trucker.
A bit more detailing has been done over the past week or so. The grab rails on the bridge have been fitted. The deck tools ie axe and knife with their holders have been made . Also the sloping 'wings' have been added complete with aerial bases. All the removable pieces ( door and air vents ) have been added to see the overall effort before being removed for painting.

Beyno,
The flying bridge and surrounding area and the telecommunications tower, in my humble opinion, is the hardest piece of scratch building required on any of the modern day lifeboats - and your build is an absolute 'Master Class'. Congratulations. The whole of your build is so easy to follow, neat and detailed, that many will be following this for sheer enjoyment, even if they never intend to build one! I have one..........but that will not be started until I have the Shannon at least on the water for its maiden trial...... {-) ........and I can see the funny side of that!
Seriously, keep up the good work and the inspiration for others to follow using styrene, ali, brass, pins and resin casting to achieve some superb scratch building detail.

Thanks for you kind comments Kim. The disc of Mersey photographs I had from you has been invaluable. Knowing you have a vast knowledge of lifeboats I may have some questions about dimensions etc later in the build if that is ok.

It's been a while since my last post. I have still been working on the Mersey although in spits and spats. Here are a few pictures of the progress so far. The hinges for the rope lockers have been made and fitted.

The grilles for the fuel fillers have been fitted these are both hinged so the fillers will be visible when made.

Next will be the catches that keep the locker doors open.

Great progress......enjoy watching this build, but must not be lulled into starting mine. Too many others to finish yet.
Thanks,
