1/96 scale 6" guns and mounting.
« on: November 25, 2019, 11:28:18 am »

I have a question which I am sure someone out there could answer. I have a Deanmould C class cruiser hull, which I fancy completing as a Ceres class as built. But at my age of shaking hands and dimming eyes I do not fancy making a open shield single 6" gun. So the question I ask would battlecrafts 4.7" open shield gun of1/48 scale pass for a 1/96 scale 62. My theory being that the 4.7 was a scaled down version of the 6".

Hi,

I don't know what the price difference would be but I've used Shapeways in the past with very good results so it may be worth looking at this one.https://www.shapeways.com/product/RXWTUAAJK/1-96-queen-elizabeth-class-6-quot-bl-mark-xii-deck-gun?li=marketplace&optionId=64308800

I’d go Shapeways too, if you don’t want a super detailed version of the 6 inch gun (which costs the money) try this guy, it’s simplified but looks the part if you’re not too bothered for extreme detail:

Dodes, Just doing the math seems to indicate that the swap you propose would be quite a ways of. I would suspect that it would come out undersized. But, to be clear, do you need the entire gun, or just the shield? In addition to the link provided previously, the same gent makes the 6" in a shielded version here:
https://www.shapeways.com/product/BS3B9BSAN/1-96-scale-british-bl-6-inch-45-cal-mark-ix-with-s?optionId=87250723&li=marketplace
It is $14.25 USD + shipping

I would reckon that the substantial cost saving between the MkXI amounts MkXII makes the difference and I'm sure that you could modify the shield with some devious use of plasticard :-)) It would save trying to reduce the height of the 4.7 mount which would be way too high, even if the barrel length was close.
