FrSky Taranis X9D and X9E / Shannon Builds
« on: November 20, 2019, 03:45:33 pm »

As some of us are building the Shannon Lifeboats using the FrSky X9D or X9E transmitters, I thought that we could exchanges programming tips, examples etc in this thread.

I purchase my X9e from Hobbyking, but had to get the X8R receivers by searching the net. They need to be the 'EU LBT' type, but they can be reflashed, according to youtube.

https://hobbyking.com/en_us/frsky-2-4ghz-taranis-x9e-accst-digital-telemetry-radio-system-w-rx6r-lr-receiver-mode-1-eu-version-with-uk-plug.html

It's a mode 1, but can be changed in the program, and centering spring is available from banggood. Or swap the gimbles over.

More programming info please as I am struggling with getting my X9E sorted out for even basic control. For my new rescue boat, (twin jet drives but no bow thruster). Any help will be greatly appreciated.

No matter what else you do, download the latest version of OpenTx ....   https://www.open-tx.org/downloads

OpenTx includes Companion, a must have if you are going to program your own model, it includes a simulator and it is so much easier than programming on the transmitter itself.

Youtube is your friend with lots of video help.
If you are brave you can download my demo of a system for a Shannon from Dropbox......  https://www.dropbox.com/s/73529imvbcn14xj/Shannon%20Demo%20file%20set.zip?dl=0  and   https://www.dropbox.com/s/x8cs9qald0wh1ck/How%20to%20successfully%20install%20a%20model%20from%20OpenTx%20Companion%20to%20your%20transmitter.pdf?dl=0    Click the download link next to the sign in button

To save me a headache,
Twin motor boat.

Has anyone set up a transmitter to slow the inboard motor when turning?

Do you want:-a) the power reduction to be proportional to the rudder movement

b) a fixed power reduction once the rudder has moved by greater than "x"
c) the motor to stop once the rudder has moved by greater than "x"

not exactly what you want, but close, and extremely simple.

this will actually increase the outboard engine, and decrease the inboard engine. to do exactly as you want (only decrease inboard engine) will require throttle curves...  if you want that, i can put that in an additional post.

this assumes you are starting with a blank model with no mixes.

go to your mixes page

add a mix to channel 1, use AIL for source, set weight to 100%
add a mix to channel 3, use THR for source, set weight to 100%
add a mix to channel 4, use THR for source, set weight to 100%

to channel 3 add an additional mix which uses AIL as its source with +30 for its weight
to channel 4 add an additional mix which uses AIL as its source with -30 for its weight

if the throttle drop/add doesn't give enough kick, or gives too much kick, adjust the weights on the additional mixes for channel 3 and 4

if you want to have a separate throttle steering from the rudder steering, use different source for additional mixes on channels 3 and 4.  i will use RUD as my source on 3 and 4, and AIL for my source on steering, so that i get engine steering on the left stick, and rudder steering on the right stick.

If the model has Jet Drives ( Shannon etc) then both motors at the same speed provides a tighter turn than slowing the inner motor down.

Ok, try this  "curves " option for proportional control. When rudder is within 25% of centre then thrust for both motors is controlled by " Thr "output. Outside that band, thrust is proportional to Rud for the  motor on the inner side of turn, while the outer motor remains under Thr control.

Inputs

I1:Port Motor                  Thr Weight (+100%)
I2: Rudder                     Ail  Weight (+100%)

I4:Stbd Motor                 Thr Weight (+100%)                            This puts both motors on the same Input - change Thr to use another Input

Curve                           CV1  3 point linear curve  0, 100, 0      output is proportional.
Logical Switches          L01             a<x           V1= I2:Rud        V2 = -25        When rudder movement exceeds -25% then L01 is set
                                    L02             a>x           V1=I2:Rud         V2 = +25       When rudder movement exceeds +25% then L02 is set
Mixes
CH1                              I1   Thr Weight (+100%)                                  :=I2   I2:Rud Weight (+100%)    Switch (L01)   Curve (CV1)    When L01 is SET then replace Thr with Rud using CV 1
CH4                               I1   Thr Weight (+100%)                                  :=I2   I2:Rud Weight (+100%)    Switch (L02)   Curve (CV1)    When L02 is SET then replace Thr with Rud using CV 1
Adjust Outputs as necessary

Comments please.

Thanks for taking the time to put this together.
Mix is for a Taymar lifeboat.

I'll put it in 'tx companion' and see what happens.

@kinmel

motor reduction should only work in forward, set lo3 for forward flag, lo4 reverse flag?

if throttle in centre, and rudder moved, then motors start up

logical switches.

Lo1  a<x   I1:rudd    -25     Lo4
Lo2  a>x   I1:rudd    25      Lo4

Lo3 a<x    I3:Thro   -25............reverse
Lo4  a>x   I3:thro    25 ............forward

no effect on motors if throttle under the 25 offset.

rename attached file to .otx

We are both learning together, it really is challenging to get all the parameters sorted.

Thanks for the update

@Old Fart
Lo1  a<x   I1:rudd    -25     Lo4  Should this read Lo3 not Lo4?
Lo2  a>x   I1:rudd    25      Lo4

Lo3 a<x    I3:Thro   -25............reverse
Lo4  a>x   I3:thro    25 ............forward

Lo4 is motors in forward mode.
Lo3 is motors in reverse.

Lo4 is motors in forward mode.
Lo3 is motors in reverse.
It is not working for me.
Where do you use Lo3 and Lo4 in the mixes?
Can we swap email addresses via PM and then we can send the model files, rather than text to insert?

pm sent.

change .txt to .otx   I think thats the extension.

use Lo4 in the logical switch setup.
