US Coast Guard 47' Lifeboat - Towing Exercise
« on: November 03, 2019, 09:54:52 pm »

The weather was so good today, I took the MLB down to the lake to test out it's towing capabilities, something I've not done before with this boat. I think it went ok! Check out my Youtube video below.

It was another beautiful morning down at the lake today. Towing a fully rigged yacht with a relatively small scale lifeboat is a lot of fun, but it's very easy to get the towline wrapped around the props when you try and film at the same time😮

Well, you survived that one Charlie - it was going good until that bit of breeze came up and the yacht overhauled you. Obviously the 'casualty' would have attempted to furl the sails in real life.
Thanks for sharing the video with us.

Ray.

Good towing technique.  Not too fast, wide turns to keep the towline taut.

The Coasties often hip tow, towing alongside.  Four lines, angle the bow of the towed boat in some.  With that setup you can handle the tow as if the two boats are one.

I think an alongside tow would be too risky - the boom and sails flapping around could easily break something. I believe that a sea anchor will sometimes be deployed from a full-sized casualty vessel to assist with keeping a straight course. So i'm going to attempt to make a small scale sea anchor and try this out!

Stick a few sleeves of foam over your towline to stop it sinking and fouling the props?

Having a job to do really makes the sailing session a lot more enjoyable. It would be nice to have some buoys set out to navigate around, that would be a challenge. Next chance i get, i'm going to take the old Solent Class out again, and try towing the yacht with that. And see how a heavier and slower Displacement Hull boat copes with the tow compared to the lighter, faster and more maneuverable MLB.

Stick one alongside and simulate an alongside tow to test your skills. Was never on a Severn until I did a boat handling course in Poole. Went from a 12 metre 600hp Mersey to a 17 metre 1600hp Severn. Then they strapped a Mersey alongside the Severn and I had to bring it through both bridges up to the RNLI college and berth it alongside one of the pontoons - in a flooding tide. Talk about squeaky bum  {-) {-) %%
