Hi, I am in the process of building a Model Slipway Assurance tug (civillian) and i`m wondering how to make a styrene wheel house look like it is made of wood. I`ve got some tamiya wood paint but it doesnt look convincing, it would be too fiddly to clad in wood. Any ideas please. Peter

Rub the styrene surface with some fairly coarse sandpaper and then dust and brush the surface with oil base wood stain to a colour of your choice. For weathered wood surface I choose a mahogany stain.  Gives a pretty good imitation. Looks like wood that has been around a bit and got knocked and worn

I had this issue with a Deans Medea kit. With a bit of lateral thinking I used Fablon wood effect sticky back plastic in two shades and applied satin varnish over the result. 11 years later it still looks fine.  I think there are other manufacturers too.
