1/128 Walrus Amphibian
« on: November 26, 2019, 04:27:27 pm »

Hi All
I'm looking for a 1/128th scale Walrus amphibian for the catapult on my County class cruiser, any help please?
I see Shapeways do a 1/100 and a 1/200 version. With 3D printing, can they simply adjust the scale and press the button or is in much more complicated than that?
Regards ....   17-09

It's usually up to the vendor who would upload a modified file to his page on Shapeways then you would order it in the usual way.  Contact the vendor/shop owner to find if he can modify the file to suit you.  It may just be a case of changing the scale of the print file.

Thank you TailUK,
Was hoping some obscure manufacturer might have made a plastic kit of one..

You can always look on Scalemates which is a database of the majority of plastic kits and associated items, transfers and aftermarket parts,  books and walkarounds.  You'll find them at https://www.scalemates.com/.  I searched for Supermarine Walrus and got 163 hits.  You can also search by scale and manufacturer.

1/128 is such an odd scale, from the aircraft modelling point of view, that you'll be pretty lucky to find an 'off the shelf' kit I imagine.  {:-{

Thank you KitS and Stan.
Thank you both for your input, I will contact Fleetscale but failing that I will either have to make one from scratch(Which I can do but don't have the time)
Or, make the point that the Walrus has just been catapaulted off and is out  patrolling!
Many thanks  17-09 Alan.......

Another option to consider is to look at paper models.  A lot are sold as files you can download- you can then re-scale them as needed on your own PC before printing.  You can also use the parts as templates to make some parts out of thin sheet styrene...

Might be worth considering, especially if you can’t take the topside weight that a heavy cast resin “kit” from a Warship fittings manufacture’s product will have— if you can even find one.

As an avid plastic aircraft modeler, I have been watching for and collecting plastic models of any naval aircraft that might exist in a common RC warship scale, for decades now.  I don’t think I have ever seen any injected kits in 1/128 scale- the closest might be old “box scale “ models - like the 1/136 scale Revell Seamaster jet flying boat.

One other option would be to look at the F-toys line. These are reasonably done plastic snap kits of famous aircraft- sold in Japan as blind collectibles.  They are nominally 1/144 scale- maybe they offered one. I know they have a Kingfisher, and a Swordfish, for example.  Maybe you can find something “ close enough”.....?

Hope this helps...

-Bill

P.S.  I’m building a Glynn Guest Casablanca class escort carrier in 1/144– I needed several TBM Avenger torpedo planes. The F-toys version is more detailed and better looking than the old Minicraft plastic kit!

Hello Bill.
Many thanks for your detailed reply, not even considered card models, they are very popular in Germany, I saw them in Dortmund at the big show there. I will look at the F-Toys you mentioned as well. I spent ages and a lot of money getting the Tamiya/ Revell 1/96th Sea kings for my Invincible carrier, eventually buying from a company in the USA. They are now vary rare.
Thank you for your help.

Glad I was able to help.

Unfortunately, there are precious few 1/96 or 1/100 scale plastic models of aircraft available, and even fewer of Naval aircraft.   1/72 scale, which is 33% too big, has become an international standard.   The only kits you’ll find in 1/100 are a few old kits from the 60s and early 70s, hence the rarity and high cost.

The only exception I’m aware of is the Accurate Miniatures 1/100 H-6O blackhawk. That can still be found easily at a reasonable price.

Personally, I need a US Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin in 1/96.  The only one I have found to date is a die-cast model, cast in wheels up mode, and it weighs a ton!

Stan,

Primary reason was availability of (affordable) aircraft kits.  In 1/144 scale,  I have 10 Wildcats and 10 Avengers, planes I have accumulated over the last 20 years, in case I built a carrier some day.  I was pushed into action by the GG stand-off scale Bodega Bay plan that appeared in ModelBoats.

P.S.  I have admired the photos on your Gambier Bay for years, and have used them as a reference to help sort out some of the details...

In this situation I'd be thinking about using the diecast hull to make a two-part female plug, and then use that to lay up a thin fibreglass shell: much lighter!

Andy,

That’s a good idea-  I had been thinking about using  the metal shell as a plug for vacuum forming...
