I gather tht a full risk evaluation was conducted involving the RN, QHM and local council! That is why there was a delay in flying it off.

Unfortunately it was not possible to respond to the time of year by borrowing Santa's reindeer.

Apparently it very successfully blew away the cobwebs for a few miles around its flight path as it departed! Interesting watching the footage, you can hear the engine note drop just a tad, as the lift fan is engaged, and by 'eck, there is some power available there!

It flew over Portchester while I was there.
Very noisey and set of a few car alarms.

Amid all or the hype and confusion of non authorised Google Military articles  :o

1. I still don't have a clear understanding if American F 35 [standard] aircraft could land on one of the new British Carriers, or would it only be the STOVL F 35B variant?

2. The flight time of an F 35 aircraft [prepared for Combat] appears to be relatively short duration [2000 lbs of missiles or 2000 lbs of fuel], so would the US only deploy F 35B aircraft in a joint exercise with RO8 or RO9? [discounting air to air refuelling]

3. The opposite question must also be asked, in that do the decks of the Nimitz or Ford Class US Carriers have BBQ retardant panels to accept the F 35B STOVL landing format?

4. Or does this mean that British F 35B pilots must attain both STOVL and conventional flight deck landing & takeoff qualification?

5. Does the RAF have any operational aircraft to perform air to air refuelling?

6. Will the soon to be released Parliamentary White Paper make any recommendations that the RAN & RAF maintain presence by deploying a 20 km military territorial exclusion zone limit around your Island?  {-) .....then hence no need for those expensive air to air petrol pumps and so save the British Tax payer squillions

The British and American media appear a little evasive [or deceptive] >>:-( about these matters

No, it needs to be a F35B. F35A is for land use, F35B is the new Harrier, F35C is for carriers with Cats & Traps

2. The flight time of an F 35 aircraft [prepared for Combat] appears to be relatively short duration [2000 lbs of missiles or 2000 lbs of fuel], so would the US only deploy F 35B aircraft in a joint exercise with RO8 or RO9? [discounting air to air refuelling]
dont know what they would do but they use them for their America class carriers for the USMC. F35B has got a further range than the Harriers they are replacing

3. The opposite question must also be asked, in that do the decks of the Nimitz or Ford Class US Carriers have BBQ retardant panels to accept the F 35B STOVL landing format?
F35B is designed for use on the America class ships not the Ford class, they will have F35C. They may use the heat reflective paint like the QE Class who knows

4. Or does this mean that British F 35B pilots must attain both STOVL and conventional flight deck landing & takeoff qualification?
the aircraft has no arrest hook or catapult arm so will use STOVL systems for landing and taking off

5. Does the RAF have any operational aircraft to perform air to air refuelling?
the RAF has a fleet of Voyagers doing this task

6. Will the soon to be released Parliamentary White Paper make any recommendations that the RAN & RAF maintain presence by deploying a 20 km military territorial exclusion zone limit around your Island?  {-) .....then hence no need for those expensive air to air petrol pumps and so save the British Tax payer squillions
ok, so its the RN not RAN.... trying to work out if your trying to be funny or not but the UK is responsible for much more airspace than the 20Km  you say under NATO, the only issue we have post brexit is Ireland being awkward about airspace if thats the case Ireland better get a proper Air force and protect themselves
The British and American media appear a little evasive [or deceptive] >>:-( about these matters
some of the info is there you just need  to look, operational matters I cant understand why they don't put it online  ok2

Thanks for your comments jingyer  [sorry my typo about RAN] .......

Our RAF has purchased a number of F 35A aircraft & a number more being the most expensive Military spend in our history

The issue here for Australia is our landmass foot print and distance between refuelling facilities.......from this limited information available, the F 35A appears to have a Combat radius of 1093 km......but this information is illusive as to the speed component to which can halve fuel consumption [and operational range]  from sub Mach 1 to Mach 1.6 ish?

Our F35 A's have ~~8000 kg capacity of internal fuel, but this does not confirm the configuration of fully armed [weight or number of missiles etc], or unarmed?

Are the US Ford Class Carriers not magnetic assisted take off?...but so conventional cable arrestor landing?

They are meant to, but the system is still cats and traps so they are for the F35C

The magnetic launch is replacing steam on the catapults which make it better for the aircraft apparently

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_Aircraft_Launch_System

Same for the new arrester gear which is designed to relieve stress on the aircraft

The advantage of the EMALS over the steam catapult is that it's controllable, whereas the steamer is an 'all or nothing' event once the fire button is pushed, although it can be pre-set for the launch velocity. The EMALS can adjust its thrust during the firing stroke thus easing the stress on the aircraft's launch bar.

My last employers developed the EMALS control system some years ago and then sold the entire division to General Atomics, which is why I know these things.  :-)

Yes, very impressive  :-))

RO8 appears to have her Stern Raytheon CIWS installed, but not her Fwd Port side unit?

Now that white building just inboard up Fwd looks like  %) a workers temporary Lunch Room, so maybe the installers were having a Cuppa when Colin took the images? ...

[Or one must ask if this another pre Brexit...pre Budget cut?

Three Phalanx close-in weapon systems will be fitted to each new aircraft carrier. Two are being fitted to HMS Queen Elizabeth during her current capability insertion period, with the third to be fitted towards the end of 2020. Three will be fitted to HMS Prince Of Wales in 2020.

Thank you Colin......

Your 2016 UK Parliamentary Hansard transcripts will confirm that funding was approved for the inclusion and installation  during the build of the two Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers [RO8 & RO9] being  three [3] of each  Raytheon Phalanx Close in Weapons Systems
................

These are simply each a 4700kg pallet to be bolted down, then Plug & Play [tin box's of 20 diameter bullets an extra {-)  ]

[I have personally assisted in the clearing a jambed bullet belt from a computer glitch in the same series CIWS gun mount]

Could be an interesting debate....which is expendable?....a Politician and their Salary increase and bullet proof motor vehicle, or a brand spanking new Aircraft Carrier of Her Magesties Royal Navy:embarrassed:

These [RO8 & RO9] may be be Warships [commissioned or not], but best keep them clear of the Strait of Hormuz

So Kit says......"What happened to well tried, and English', 'refit'?"

Look I agree 100% Kit....ask any 10 blokes in the Pub, from a waterfront town or city 'what a refit was?' & you get the straight unanimous answer........put her in dock & fix it :-))  ...[just like when RO8 had a leaky shaft seal during the first few weeks of her Warranty period]

Ask the same 10 blokes [in the Pub]  'what a capability insertion period was?' ....well 6 wouldn't know or have any answer & the remaining 4 after serious deliberation would concur and suggest some type of artificial animal breeding program? O0

'capability insertion period'.......such are the voices and intellect of the persons chosen to represent and lead your Country

the Carriers had a very specific build timeline it has nothing to do with politicians but knowing what's happening when and where.
The priority was to test the ship and then work the aircraft into the mix, weapons were last for consideration.

it wasn't called a refit as it was part of the planned building timeline.. hence the term Capability insertion period

Regarding the Phalanx, like the US we pool our Phalanx for the fleet after the comments regarding them being installed during construction, it was then decided to refurbish and upgrade all our units. As the US are upgrading to and also diverting some phalanx to other uses away from the navy. it took much longer than anticipated for all the upgrades to be completed.

Vastly different circumstamces Colin..........however despite any previous flight bookings, he should not have left our Lands as he did

Being a cynical realist, I expected him to pop up on Christmas day in a far off land where some of our Troops are fighting a war for Black gold .....his apology in/on Australian media this afternoon was appalling

So whilst you have taken the thread away from RO8 & RO9, I must ask if you ever read the works of our Isabel Marion Dorethea McKellar OBE, at school? .......just reminds, that these events have come and gone before

I suppose I ought to make some comment about your national song being 'Australia Fire' but, yes, let's stay with the carriers.
