Joysway Focus
« on: December 27, 2019, 10:10:15 am »

Hi
I've just got my first RC yacht and it's not working properly, I bought it 2nd hand so no instructions.
First of all the rudder wasn't moving but the sales were, after playing about with it we got the rudder moving but the sales stopped. Sometimes they move when we are not even touching the controller. We got the sales moving again and the rudder moved a bit but it seemed to have a delay. Sometimes neither work.
As I said I'm a beginner so help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Have you got fully charged transmitter and receiver batteries?

The first thing I would do with a secondhand yacht
would be to fit new batteries all round. Buy decent
Alkaline ones, not Poundshop cheapo's.
Your symptoms seem to point to low voltage or a
poor connection somewhere.

The receiver has a green light but as soon as we touch the controller it flashes red then when we let go of the controller it goes back to green.
Is that wrong?

If your batteries are new then the next culprit in line is a dodgy connection somewhere.  Do you have a 27 MHz or a 2.4 GHz transmitter?  If that is all gobbledegook to you, does it have a telescopic aerial that pulls out to about 3 feet or does it have a stubby plastic bit about 2" long?  If 27 Mhz/telescopic aerial, then the radio system is likely to be fairly old, and a good clean of all the plugs and sockets with some WD40 and an old toothbrush might help.  Of course, that could be the problem whatever system you have.

Whereabouts are you?  Do you know if there is a model boat club near you?  I guess from your question that you aren't familiar with RC systems.  The type of problem you describe sometimes needs a bit of swapping parts to identify which bit is faulty, but as you don't have spare bits to try, that won't work for you.  But if you can find a fellow RC enthusiast you should be able to track down your problem.

Good luck

Greg

Hi
Thanks. Unfortunately I don't know anyone with a boat to swap parts.
It is 2.4ghz. the aerial does not extend.
I take it it doesn't matter that the number on the controller is different to the number on the receiver? J5C01R on receiver and on transmitter J4C03?

Sounds like you have a bad connection
In the transmitter. A favourite culprit is
a problem with the battery holder with
either a dirty or badly fitting contact.
Worth checking as the terminals often
need a bit more pressure against the
battery.

Could be a bad battery holder connection, try taking the batteries out and rubbing the connections in the battery holder with a bit of sandpaper

Hi Katrinaseator, most of us put a general indication of area where we live on the Avator.  It probably needs a general look over by someone with an RC boat.  RC spares are not very dear if you have a fault.
I am a yottie so I can only say you have made a good choice.  Did you buy your yacht over the Internet?  Otherwise the guy you bought her from should be able to help.

Have you unplugged the servos and pushed them back in again?  Just a thought have you gone through the binding process?
Good luck.

An instruction book is always useful to read.  There is a downloadable one here - https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1075/6524/files/J4C05_2.4_GHz_4_CH_Transmitter_Receiver_Instruction_Manual.pdf?13145454483792043252
I don't have a Joysway outfit, but observing a friend who has one I noted that strange things happen if the "mix" switch is "on" unintentionally.
If anything resembling control happens, binding is OK.  It is a way of ensuring that the receiver will respond to no other transmitter but the one that it recognizes, getting any response shows that re-binding is very unlikely to help.  it is important to ensure that the transmitter is switched on first, so that the receiver will have something to latch on to.

I'm risking stating the obvious, but make sure all the batteries are the correct way round which might not be the case when you got the equipment. I'll bet there isn't anyone on here who hasn't done that once. Also check that each servo is plunged the same correct way round, most often with the black wire nearest the edge of the receiver.

Also insert the servo plug between two sets of
pins on the Rx
🔌Been there done that :embarrassed:

How do each of these behave with the transmitter switched OFF ?
(1) The red/green light on the receiver.
(2) reaction of the rudder servo arm & sailwinch drum when you manually rotate them?
Why?
Answer: To find out the function of the light and if the movement is down to a failsafe position on loss of radio contact.

The online pdf file for Futaba R304SB-E indicates:-
No signal recep-tion  LED: Red
Receiving signals  LED: Green
Unrecover-able failure (EEPROM,etc.)   LED: Red and Green turn on alternately.

Assuming all FHSS receivers are alike then assume likewise as your starting point.
Back to you again.

I assume a broken aerial connection within the transmitter.
