Carrier deck cranes
« on: December 28, 2019, 04:13:30 pm »

looking for suggestions on how to source/build the carrier deck crane @1/96  I know there is a step by step build on by Rex on his Hermes build posted on scale warships, but not sure if site is active or not, if I log in it accepts me then when I click on subject it dumps me.  So assuming it is dead, any ideas please.

If you build the model so that, at the moment, there are no disabled aircraft on
the deck, then you won't have to build a deck crane.  ok2 %)

Yes seen that but its of no use as it is USA version, the one I need is a four wheel chassis, mounting a Coles crane.  I can scratch build it but did want to see how the builder of Hermes tackled it.

Some years ago, there was a thread that covered a UK carrier and the equipment forward of the bridge, there were black and white photo's and if I remember correctly it showed the damage to the bow of the carrier, it was a discussion of what was repaired after WWII and I think it had prop aircraft and maybe an early jet, my memory is not like it used to be so maybe someone may remember what the thread was, there was a small tow truck and I am sure (could be wrong) a crane.

Warspite thanks for that link and the toms models, that is for the shapeways model,  She also had the four wheeled bed with a coles crane on it, which is what I am talking about.  I have the Jecobin plan for it so know what it looked like,  I know that Rx did a build on it in his Hemres article on the Modelwarships group, but seeing as it will not allow you to use it I assume it is now defunct,

In the search there was a picture where a coles style telehandler from the front is slightly obscured by jets, I know it was a telehandler i.e. pneumatic ram pushes sections out, had the front of something seen in the 90's or earlier - quite boxy similar to this but probably not as heavy (this is 140T)

Hm, the former one will be the easier to build but neither will be five minute jobs. I had a quick look but could not find anything like these. That US crane dominates the search results even when 'Coles' etc are entered.

I did look at the Airfix kit of HMS Victorious which might have given you albeit basic 3D references if it contained models of these cranes.

The images you have found show the models to be quite nicely detailed, I wish you well in your builds
