LiPo/LiFe battery for Turnigy i6 TX?
« on: May 11, 2021, 04:13:52 pm »

Has anyone converted a Turnigy/Flysky i6 Transmitter to use a Lipo or LiFe battery pack?
Anyone know if its possible?

From the manual the transmitter voltage is 4.2 to 6V. A 1S Lipo or LiFe is too low a voltage and a 2S has too high a voltage. It could perhaps be done by using a 2S pack and a 5V BEC but would require a lot of modification to the battery box or fit an external battery box wired into the transmitter. Woukld also need an external low voltage alarm as the onboard one can't check the battery.

Jim,

Thanks for your reply. A member of our club asked the question and I didn't think it was possible but wanted to check.
I use normal alkaline cells and have no problems, I think he is using rechargeable NiMh and claims he doesn't get a long use. Due to Covid I haven't been able to meet him to check what he is using.

I expect you'd be fine with 2s LiFE- they have a lower cell voltage than lipo, at around 3.2-3.3v, giving 6.4-.6.6v respectively.

A fully charged LiFe cell is 3.65V giving a total of 7.3V for a 2S pack. While this will drop to a nominal 6.4V with use the initial voltage may damage the Tx which is maximum 6V.

Plenty of modellers using 2s lipo on this TX, but if you're concerned about cooking the board, then just wire in a 6v BEC to brickwall the voltage. The main thing you want to be careful of is running the battery too low and knackering the cells. Fit a lipo alarm if the TX doesn't have one.
