Can I seal and paint like this....
« on: January 12, 2020, 09:24:12 pm »

Hello chaps..

I've got to a stage in my build where Im starting to think about preparing the hull for painting. (A while off but thinking about it)

My Balsa Hull is filled (Deluxe Materials Model Lite Lightweight filler) and sanded..

Im going to use Deluxe eze coat resin and glass cloth to strengthen before painting..

Now the question is... is it as simple as now coating with the resin... sand, glass cloth, more resin, sand, then prime and paint..
Also theres bound to be some areas that need touching up with filler that ive missed.. at what stage would I do this?

Hi, what I do after the last resin coat is give a thin coat of primer then when dry lightly sand to show up
the low spots that will require filling, I use car body filler for that. After the sanding you can prime the hull
as usual?

Nice hull.

I started with my balsa hull from here

and had good results. Rather than recall everything I did you may find my blog helpful to read a couple of pages

Hi to really show up the spots that need filling you need to get the surface to a uniform colour, grey, white, whatever.  Then they are obvious, the eye is drawn away from them when looking at the very nice wood finish you have.

Thanks for your advice guys..

So.. as its bare balsa, would it be advisable to resin first then primer grey... or can i just spray Halfords primer grey over find the low spots.. then resin.?

Ive read horror story's of paints reacting with resins ect.

I completely finished two layers of glass cloth before priming https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,62915.msg667470.html#msg667470
