My first R/C Boat
« on: January 15, 2020, 10:05:21 am »

Just saying hello. I have only built and flown R/C planes before so a boat is a new experience and having chosen the Caldercraft Northlight I came across this site looking for advice. Hopefully I can post as I progress as the inevitable “pitfalls” may be useful to others. The first one, and excuse a complete beginner on this one, is the need to trim off half an inch or so of the top of the hull moulding. Sadly nowhere in the instructions mentions this and it was only after a careful study of the plans I realised this. No doubt there will be many more such stumbling blocks on the way!

Hi,  there's a world of knowledge with the Mayhem members should you need any help but as you've built and flown aircraft you should have no trouble, it's quite normal to have to trim off the top of the hull moulding to varying degrees, let us know how you are getting on with your build.

Greetings edinsteve!

Welcome to the Mayhem!

Yes, a RadioJoe says, nearly all kits hulls need some sort of trimming, holes drilled, slots cut etc, etc..... and plans can leave a lot to be desired!

I should have known as I recently built a Billings lifeboat from a kit I picked up in a charity shop and had to trim the hull on that. Thought it would be good for the grandkids in the bath! I doubt it would hardly survive that hence the more substantial “Northlight” which won’t fit in the bath  {-) . I’ve only built static models before, Billings “Cutty Sark“ and Caldercraft “Bounty” but salvaged a servo from an old r/c plane for this. All the rest is new to me.

Take yourself down to Inverleith park on a Sunday. The Edinburgh Model Boat Club https://www.edinburghmbc.org.uk/ sails there and their members will gladly help you with any problems.

Thanks for the suggestion about Inverleith and I will look in there to see them. I don’t think I will be sailing anything for a few months yet (last build the “Bounty” took about 8 years to finish although I left rigging for about 6years of that). I will no doubt be under grandchild pressure with this one so let’s see.

I think if you've built a couple of static POF framed sailing ships you're more adventurous than me!  Don't let cutting things and "filling gaps" in drawings or instructions put you off.  There's loads of guidance between Modelboats Mag and their website, books and then on-line buids for this kit.

For your bulwarks it's easy.  I did my GRP hull 2 weeks ago (different boat).  Mark where to cut every few inches and use Tamiya masking tape to give an edge to cut to to join up the marks.  This way you can "fair" the line by eye.  I was dubious but tried first 2 inches with my dremel with cutting disc then stopped.  Far more accurate, easy on the living room table and with less dust to use a razor saw (Xacto / expo tools etc) and cut along the tape line.  Very little clean-up after.  I cut my 500mm long hull in less than 10mins.  Much more more work to fill-in and sand back the GRP inside the bulwark afterwards!

Thanks for the suggestion :-)) . I cut the lifeboat with a hobby knife - a bit wobbly but for this I have diamond cutting discs which did a nice neat job on the GRP hull and there was a moulded line to guide me. Now for some fibre glassing. Never trid it before so should be fun. Then the instructions say to fit the R/C equipment. What R/C equipment? Back to the shop methinks. One item puzzling me is this ESC thingy. I have a Mtroniks M600 motor and am wondering what ESC I should get for it? There was a lot to be said for those old static models as most things came in the box.

Thought I should post an update as I have now completed the model. The wheelhouse was a bit iffy and after construction there seemed to be extra bits to attach over the original structure. Didn’t bother with them and pannelled with strip wood instead. One issue was the white metal turnbuckles for the mast shrouds. Instructions have them installed early on but subsequent work meant them being moved and, eventually, on rigging the mast, they gave way. Solution was to drill out and install brass wire top and bottom but should not have been necessary. Other metal parts were generally OK apart from needing filing down.
R/c installation was OK with a 12v battery, Viper ESC and brushed motor. A Futaba 2 channel transmitter and receiver worked fine so ready to go. Once I try it in thr bath and add ballast that is.
Thanks everyone for their help and suggestions.

I have been a bit remiss and didn’t post any photos so will try to post some of the completed model. Apologies if it doesn’t work.

I didn’t notice the earlier photos were just before the model was completed. Here are a few more -

I believe that the site (postimage) hosting these photos has been hacked and clicking on any images may take you to unwanted sites. My apologies that this has happened. I have deleted all images from the site but they still seem to appear here.

After Postimage was hacked photos of the puffer had to be removed so here are a few replacements.

Really nice Puffer.

Surely it is time to dump PostImage?
