when I am to fit the 1.5mm base to my springer, am I ok to wet the timber sheet first so it’s more pliable and hold it with masking tape till it dries to the required shape, then glue?


Or something else?


It’s an awkward shape to clamp while the glue dries

Hi Dave  If you cut the 1.5 ply so that the grain runs from side to side you'll find it bends around the shape easily, even if you have to join two pieces together with a doubler on the inside like I did it's worth it, you will have a job to fit it with .the grain running fore and aft. I used 1/8" ply cross grain with one join see pic.

How did you clamps it while the glue dries??

If you have 3mm ply, you will
not get it to bend and hold while the glue dries
Unless you make a pair of shapes to
conform with the side shapes and use
Dozens of clamps.

Hi Dave,  The answers quite simple I glued and pinned it, most model shops have very thin gauge panel pins if you're lucky enough to have a shop near you if not you can get some from www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk  after it's dry punch the pins under the surface and fill with body filler once sanded and painted you never see them .

Well I was right first time, I have 1.5mm for the bottom.


I assume this is ok???


And as Joe, in order to get the grain to run the right way, I am going to have to have a join, probably using another section of 1.5mm thick for the reinforcing piece.


Does that all make sense?

yes you should be ok with 1.5 ply you'll need to reinforce the bottom where the motor and batteries sit, even using the 3mm ply I fitted a 6mm "floor" to fix the motor mount to and seat the batteries.
