Is it a waste of glue?
« on: January 19, 2020, 10:17:18 am »

I always make a transport/storage case early in the build of a model, it can also be used as a test tank. Built one today, 10mm thick ply, screwed and glued. then i ran a fillet of  glue along the internal corners, like a weld. So, coming to my query, does this really add strength, or is it just a waste?

Cheers, Terry.

I had a second hand boat cross my path a couple of months ago. Usual scruffy, substandard stand made out of cheap 3mm plywood. The stand was nailed together and barely glued. It could be easily flexed about. I ran a fillet of decent PVA glue around the inner edges of the stand. Coming back to it the next day, it was now rock solid. so I would say not a waste of glue..

A test tank full of water will tend to push the side panels outwards. An internal glue (what type of glue?) 'weld' won't be as good at preventing that as an external resin-tape seam. That said, you have covered the end grain which must improve its longevity.

If you have already glued the joint, and the joint is a reasonably tight one, adding glue externally is pretty pointless - unless you are talking about an epoxy fillet, which does have structural strength, but I assume you are talking about standard wood glue.  If there is enough of a gap for the added glue to penetrate the joint, then yes, it might add some strength but a better joint would be more beneficial.

also an additional safe guard as to retain the water, you cannot guarantee that the glue in the joint has ensured a water tight seal if used as a test tank, whereas the inside run is visible and uninterrupted.

Thanks for the replies guys. Just to clarify my use of the case as a test tank;
The first time i did it i used a large suitcase and lined it with polythene sheet, the sort you can buy to cover furniture when decorating etc. Just place it over the case and fill with water.

Cheers, Terry.

Just don't get why you wouldn't use your bath to water test?

Terry,
      No matter how good a joint might be, I have always run a small bead of glue along internal joints and then smoothed it into a fillet with a finger tip.  This ensures that no otherwise invisible cracks are present at the joint to weaken the structure and also prevents water penetration.

It seems to have worked so far.

Our local “Big box store” has a post-holiday clearance sale on large plastic storage bins, ones intended to hold artificial trees.  I got a test tank that is 53 inches long, 18 inches wide, and 14 inches deep, for under $30.
I had been toying with building one, but the materials would have cost more than that!

It should be a lot easier to sort out a model’s trim when I can look at it from the sides and ends, as opposed to looking down on it in the family bath...
