This is very impressive work. I like the way you have done the planking and how you have shaped them.  :-))

Yes....must agree, an excellent top planking layer & rubbing strips  :-)) ....the deck planking pins also look fine in bronze [brass]

[PS..what are you planning for the hull planking [preservation]?.......have you read about Tung Oil?........

Thank you!!   :-)

I use shellac for everything as to give a satin hull finish and for every wood including all parts need to be coloured
shellac is one of the best primer for wood especially for soft wood that need to be sanded.
basically 1-2 hands of shellac are matt, if you want a gloss surface it need many hands.
with shellac I also remove glue stains.
I prepare shellac by dissolving 10% flakes in pure alcohol (99% pure) and this is my varnish for many things.
I use shellac as a primer on brass when water-based acrylic paints do not stick.

ok back on the boat..
dock nails are made with iron wire, I do holes with a pin and then I fix cut wire with shellac.. when it dry I sand with 400 grain sand paper

Colors are black Tamiya flat and Vallejo white pergamino, all visible wood shellac only

I changed the kit's transom, actually I had built it with the windows as indicated in the instructions..
here you see the first version, difference from kit manual: only the gold color has turned white (really there is no gold on my Essex)

but a 4 windows transom I can't see it well for this whaler.
so I redone the transom in a different way with only 2 portholes for waste

if you want to compare the differences this is the occre Essex

Totally agree, as we know, Shellac is totally natural and from Mother Nature  :-)) , it too has been used for Centuries for preserving wood

Looking forward to more progress images

Something to consider about whalers, if you want to weather the model.

“The forecastle was black and slimy with filth, very small and hot as an oven. It was filled with a compound of foul air, smoke, sea-chests, soap-kegs, greasy pans, tainted meat,”
https://www.whalingmuseum.org/learn/research-topics/overview-of-north-american-whaling/life-aboard

I have read a number of seafaring books from the days of sail, and I seem to remember that the whaling ships stank, and were generally filthy. This was a combination of odors and filth from any whales that were currently being processed, and blood, whale oil and soot that had seeped into the ships timbers over time.
