Motor Advice Please

I have finally got back to my Stevns Arctic build she will be quite a beast when she is finally finished. She is 42 inches long with a beam of 14.5 inches.
do I stay with brushed or try brushless.
I was thinking of Mobile Marines T12 motors, I haven’t used these motors before so any advice on the performance and quality of these would be most appreciated (would they be up to the job)

Or are there any suitable brushless motors that wound be able to be powerful enough for this size of tug.
To be honest I haven’t a clue about brushless motors.

I am not an Expert on what Motors to use but, in my 20 foot long Bulk Carrier I use a 12v Car Heater/ Blower Motor from a scrap yard and it works just fine.
There is a Build on here somewhere.

Brian

From what i have seen of Asd model boat setups
Brushless is very popular.
Any thought on the final Rpm?
Has Simon at propshop given a maximum rpm
for that beautiful props?

From memory Leen used a
Turning G46 motor to drive his 80mm props
I can’t remember what the reduction was.
Also Andy/Taranis
Mentioned that 70mm graupner units will take
Over 8000rpm
I think they are 3.1 reduction??

Hello Chipchase

I am a great fan of the T12, making predominantly cargo boats and tugs. My Lloydsman Tug was 48" x 9" and ran beautifully on a T12. I forget what size prop it had, quite large though. The T12 should drive up to a 60 mm prop with no problem, it is designed as a slow speed high torque motor ideal for tugs. If you have any doubts give MMM a ring.

Hi Chipchase,
I too am a great fan of M,M,M T12 bought them for my Tynesider, Wearsider, and have one for the Gragsider/Hendon. As I have often said before I only like to put and set up a motor once so that's why I buy the T12's, Yes I hear some say pricey  but I think there worth it.
           Regards Howard.

T12 is rated at
4600rpm?
It really depends again on final rpm at the props and your gearing with the drive units.

Brian, I have just been given one, together with a Prop Shop prop. Should you wish to evaluate the motor feel free. Running on 12 volt gives one mighty air flow, Hull is a beamy fishing boat of 45" long, Bill

Thanks for the offer Bill, I don't know which way to go. I might just stick to the motors that I know a little bit about these brushless motors are a complete new ball game, if i decide to go brushless i will pop along and have a word with you.

Thanks

Brian,

Quick question
Could Kort nozzles be used with your Stevns Arctic hull
Or is it specifically for schottel units?
If so would 70mm units be suitable?

Hi Brian it's great to see you back!

My friends at OceanWorks have developed lots of Schottel options in the past year.

This is one of their 90mm units and as you can see the motor is not a beast by any means.

They gear the drive at a ratio of 5:1

Andy,

That’s a good price £131 for each 90mm unit
including motor.
Any idea what the postage costs are incl customs to the uk?

Postage on my jet drives was about £22. If you are unlucky enough to score import charges you stand to pay a fixed border force charge of up to £12.50, I think post office is still £8 but then you would be charged 20% VAT on the declared value.  Bear in mind that 90mm schottel is like 70mm prop but they do 120mm with 100mm prop.

They also do full CNC brass

Andy,
I had a quick look at the 90
It mentions a 76mm prop
I thought Stevns Arctic hull would only take an 80.
