What is this old Basset and Lowke hull
« on: February 19, 2020, 02:50:40 pm »

My club is trying to establish exactly what this model is of. Its almost certainly a 1920-30's Basset and Lowke hull carved out of a solid piece of wood. We think it originally had two funnels and later someone has attempted to add a third. One club member thinks its based on a 1st world war V&W warship?

It has a fitted prop shaft and at some time was steam powered.
We need to know exactly what it is before putting it up for sale on here or on ebay. It may be a collectable from a bye gone age?

Can anyone help identify it. Thanks

Hi Chas. Its 54 inches long

That kind of puts the mockers on it as the Bassett Lowke was only 40" long.  Perhaps another firm?  The Army and Navy store had their own range of models along the same lines as Bassett Lowke.  Who ever built it's safe to say that it dates to the 1920-1930s perhaps a tiddy bit later.

So if is not a Basset and Lowke is it worthless?   Our club is trying to raise funds from it but that may be more of hope than reality?

If it was a Bassett and Lowke would it be worth advertising given its current state?

Maybe its bin fodder!

Bassett Lowke was a lot like the Airfix of it's day. They made a lot of models.   just because this might not be a Bassett Lowke model it doesn't mean it's worthless.  It could be Army & Navy, or Gammages or even Harrods.  It could be home made using Bassett Lowke parts which were sold separately.  What ever it is someone would love to give it some TLC and get it back on the water or back on display.  Put it up for sale and see what reaction you get.  Even if you only get a few quid it's money you didn't have before.

It’s never rubbish or fit for the bin. It’s got history and even if it isn’t Bassett Lowke somebody put some effort into making it and that alone is worth saving.
My Dad and I are repairing and restoring a brass plate 1/64th scale HMS Eskimo and we think it was probably made in the late 1940s and had a steam plant fitted at one stage. The chap we are rebuilding it for wants it doing because his grandfather made it and would love to see it sail.
Somebody would buy yours I’m sure as it is of that age to be historically important to the model world.

I found this link. Shows the 1914 Bassett catalogue. Quite clear they made boats 54 inches long and there's one shown that has a hull and other parts very similar to the one I posted at the start of the thread. This link may be useful for the future.

So they made an A B C grade models, interesting.    I should imagine that there were intermediate versions in which the detail were varied.  This would explain how your model is Grade B length but only a single prop.  Congrats, looks like it is a Bassett Lowke after all.

Originally that would have been an expensive boat £18 in 1914 equates to about £2,000  today.

Pretty much like Graupner RTR models, today.
