RV Calypso Refit
« on: February 21, 2020, 01:34:50 am »

I have recently acquired a version of the Calypso that was nicely put together by a good builder.

The RC system is, however, a bit rudimentary and so I am setting out to do a refit on it.

My first task was to build a box to protect the Calypso and its helicopter.

Here is the box (it didn't want to accompany the last post!).

This is some of the stuff that I want to replace.

The there is nothing wrong with the two-channel radio, or the single speed control (for two motors), or the 4xAAA batteries, I just want a little more sophistication.

So here is the start of the electrical component tray.

Spaces for fuses for the system overall, each of the two ESCs, the smoke and sound generators and the receiver/servos.

Hi

Just one thing when you get to the point of fitting the battres do keep then as low as pos dont use an S.L.A, as she is very tender.

Thanks Fred.

My plan is to use LiPo batteries, but I also plan to add the difference between their weight and weight of the 6-volt sla battery that they will replace, in the form of shot, below the plywood deck that is glued to the bottom of the hull.  This should actually lower the cg of the model.

My plan is also to replace the lead plates, that were simply sitting on the plywood deck, with shot that will be located between the deck and the hull as well.  The eight-ounce speaker magnet will - I think - sit on the top of the deck where the lead plates are currently.  I am, however, contemplating a hole in the deck that the magnet may sit in, lowering it even further.

I was a little alarmed by the lack of security of the lead plates.  Seems to me that any fairly violent roll could actually dislodge the plates, greatly changing the trim, and almost certainly sending the boat to the bottom.  Perhaps it was only intended to sail on very calm water.

Hi

One other thing some have added to there Calypso, are Bilge Keels to help stop the roll,

As I recall, the Calypso was not originally designed as a working model and may have featured a planked wooden hull when first introduced - perhaps someone can confirm whether or not that was the case?

The introduction of the ABS hull did make it a viable r/c project but only if great care is taken as the hull does carry a lot of topweight.

There are bilge keels shown on the build plans, but none are installed. I may do that.

On the topic of tender boat fixes, I understand that lightening the superstructure and adding weight as far as possible below the waterline are both good ideas.

But what about fore and aft placement of the ballast?  It strikes me that the farther forward and aft the ballast can be, without compromising the trim, the less the boat would pitch. Or is the effect of doing this too marginal to make the effort worthwhile?

I am pretty happy with the electrical connections tray.  The two empty fuses are for the sound and smoke components that are in the future.

The couplings in the second photo are both cracked.  Does anyone know where I can source replacements?

Colin's comment that the Calypso may not have been designed for the water operations makes sense.  The hole I made in the superstructure for a place to secure the 2.4G receiver show that some seriously heavy materials were used in the construction.  (The hole will be out of sight, but I still need to clean it up a little.)

The arrival of the ShockWave 3 sound system required a rethink of how to install the "stuff" in the back of the boat.

I decided to redo the electrical component tray a little shorter than the first one to give room for the speaker to be mounted behind it.

Now I can think seriously about trimming the boat.

Final portion of the refit was to find a way to let the sound out.

My solution was to remove the rear hatch cover and replace it with a piece of nylon cloth.  I also added a small magnet to keep the saucer from swinging around.

Works like a charm.

Alas, no.

The Calypso was acquired so I could experiment with some of the boat-specific elements of the RC world and so I would have something to play with at the pond this summer.  It has served this purpose very well and I have now moved on to building a Vliestroom from Model Slipway.

The saucer and heli will remain for display only.

I will, however, continue to work on my scale helicopters and dream of building a submersible in the future.
