So why would that be the holy grail?
I thought the top of the line Cheddar marine engines were Gemini and Proteus.

Hi, I will try to answer your question. first, the V4 oscillation attractive mechanical motion is second to none. Second, its power to weight ration is again second to none. Third, compact: It's square-ish. much shorter and wider than an inline makes it easier to fit in a hull.

The Cheddar Gemini & Proteus are great engines but weight to power ratio is not as good and hard to package, since the engine is long and skinny. Also the center of gravity of the vertical inline is much higher making the launch buoyancy a bit unstable. I will take a V type over an inline anytime IMHO.

Hi,
I agree with you on most points and yes it is interesting to look at. However, one could get the same power from a Puffin with bigger cylinders, with even less weight and complication :-) Then there is also the problem that oscillators from Cheddar are rated to 3 bar, over that, the springs give way and the cylinders lift and loose steam.
Although I haven't had the Pegasus in my hands, I expect it to be about the same weight as a Gemini.
I think the Pelican is the best in terms of power to weight ratio, being also very compact in its v-twin configuration.

Are you planning to buy the Pegasus and install it in a boat?

I was expecting it to fetch more than £327.

Hi, this one was missing the eccentric feed pump & the original displacement lubricator; both come with valves. I am trying to post pics of mine, but don’t know how?

I meant to clarify that the displacement lubricator on this engine is not the original

It looks to me like a Cheddar lubricator, but not the usual type. It is wider in diameter to hold more oil for 4 cylinders - I have the same on my Proteus engine. Judging by the green colour this must be a later engine. The early Pegasus engines were dark red and had the smaller lubricator with drain at the bottom.

I'd like to see your Pegasus engine. Could you email me the pictures? I'll send you my email in a PM.

From the listing....

Cheddar Models Pegasus V4 Steam Model Engine

This engine was bought new from the factory by me at the end of 1998. It has been bench run but never installed. It has been well lubricated and dry stored and is for sale as I am really not going to get the chance to build the model I had planned. The finish is factory original although the brass is a little grubby because of storage in my workshop. There is no damage to the engine and it will turn over by hand.

Sold for £327.00

Here is Grady's Pegasus engine. He asked me to post the picture. Perhaps he can tell us more about it.

Perhaps interesting some more Pegasus varieties:

In green - An early (?) version of the Cheddar Pegasus engine with the old oscillating water pump,

In red - same engine type with the newer fixed vertical water pump.
