Lifeboat paint
« on: February 29, 2020, 12:29:08 pm »

Can anyone advise the currency available paints that give the best colours for the RNLI Lifeboats - especially the correct shade of orange and blue?

In particular, is it possible to buy a "Rattle Can" from Halfords that would match either colour.?

Many of us use the excellent Halfords primer paint, so it would be nice to be able to pick up the two main colours from the same source - if possible!

Halfords, or any paint shop supplier can supply these colours as rattle cans, or touch up.
British Standard Range 381C  colour  BS 557 Light Orange
British Standard Range 381C  colour  BS 105 Ford Balliol Blue, sometimes known as Oxford Blue.
Hull bottom is not a precise colour, but RAL 7016 Anthracite matches up pretty well with an actual boat's paint colour.

For the orange paint from Halfords use Volkswagen Brilliant Orange and Ford Balliol Blue?  Balliol is a college at Oxford and as I understand there was some issue in Halfords calling it Oxford Blue hence Balliol?

Thanks for the advice about the Halfords spray can colours and BS references.

Check your local Halfords. Ours are bike shops now. It's been a few years since I questioned paint but ours didn't mix any more. Even before when they did they would only do to a registration plate match. May be different now, I hope so.

There are many colours that Halfords no longer keep on the shelf. You can order online for collection at a store or at their cycle store arm. They will not post due to post office restrictions

I bought old stock of this bargain https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-FORD-BALLIOL-BLUE-181-HOLTS-SPRAY-PAINT/372741847764

For VW Orange use WHITE primer for best result or even pink primer

Have a look locally for car paint factors as  a lot of them do sell aerosols and will obviously do a mix in a can for you, and they are compatable with halfords primer and others as well.

@Andy, what brand of primer do you use under the orange?

Similarly what brand and colour of primer are people using for the hull?

I've read a lot of threads about the Halfords(?) primer being quite soft and causing the stand to leave marks, especially if using Appliance White but I've yet to find what alternative people are using.

SteveHalfords primer is fine. Just people Including me use it wrong. If a thin coat is applied its fine. When people add coats after coats to get a uniform colour then it comes soft. As the first coat has not hardened. One coat is fine its only a primer.Halfords paints are good but very expensive

I quite agree with John, it's tempting to add coats but the wrong thing to do. The white does seem to be softer in that situation than the grey or red though.

I was wondering where that pink primer came from - it should be perfect for use under the orange colour!

Thanks for the replies, that's been really helpful.

I had been using the tamiya primers on some of the smaller bits but was planning on using the Halfords primer for the hull itself.
