Cast metal handwheels
« on: March 25, 2020, 03:52:58 PM »

Has anyone any idea where I can get whitemetal hand wheels (with handle) about 7mm diameter. I think AMP used to do them but I've tried the usual suspects without luck.
Cheers

Why not try using Press Studs and adapt them.

It's a bit difficult to see in this photo but the red fire hydrant handwheels are about that size and are made by slicing the spacer within TV aerial coax cable. it would be easy enough to add a wire handle. Boat is 1:48 scale.

Thanks Colin but that's a bit too small. It's for gun elevation wheels on a pair of 12pdrs at 1:32.Cheers,Tony

Billings do these at 7mm, plastic though unless you specifically desire cast metal?  Othwewise you might do well looking at the model railway guys, but they will be etched brass.

I had a few of the above recently from Cornwall model boats (out of stick now but no doubt available elsewhere).  The bigger ones I got at same time also is 13mm which might be a bit big for you.

If you can take plastic do you know anyone with a half-decent 3-D printer. 8mm diameter handwheels is just about the smallest I can print so far.

Sorry I missed your post Len. I looked at that but it's a real last resort trying to drill a 1mm hole in the steel for the handle (Age+Eyesight!)

Thanks Rich, I'd tried Cornwall and the plastic ones are a backup but the problem is that I have a single 10mm cast one which, I'm fairly certain, came from either Anglia Models or Hobbies but the first seems to have disappeared off the net and the product list for Hobbies is pretty limited and it's only when you go there that you see the whole lot!

That 10mm one is brilliant so I'm loath to substitute until forced into it.
Cheers for now

Hello Tony,
may be to big but Mobile Marine Models make a three spoke 12.5mm cast metal ones if  you cant find any could you not think about making a silicon mould and cast some in resin I cast some things and find it very easy if you look on flea bay you can find very small amounts so not much costs may work out cheaper then buying just a thought.
               Regards Howard.

Hi Howard, rather too large for the job. I could cast them in PU along with the rest of the gun parts I made but there is a specific reason why metal would be a lot better.
Hi Adam. PM sent.
