Straightening Brass Tube.
« on: March 28, 2020, 08:14:52 pm »

Hello.

I have received some thick wall 8mm O.D.x 7mm I.D.x 500mm long tubes which are slightly bent, not overly, but I need to straighten it if possible before I can use it for making prop shaft tubes.

Any ideas ?

Roll the tube on a flat surface (glass pane is ideal) this will show which way it bends & mark the high points. Get 2 V blocks again on a flat surface, place the tube with the high point upper most, gently push down. Recheck by rolling on a flat surface & look down the tube pointing at a light source & a vertical line (the frame of a window) This will show if it is straight.. My late father was a gunsmith & I have watched him straighten many gun barrels using this method although he didn't use the flat pane of glass as the sights would get in the way ..

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Will give it a go, but unfortunately I don't have any proper V blocks, so, thought that maybe use the inside angle of some 50mm heavy aluminium angle may do.

What do you think ?

That would work Mike, the V blocks only help to stop the tube rotating when applying pressure..

Tried the ally angle and it worked.

Many thanks.
