Advice on electrics for Graupner HMS Hood 1-150
« on: April 01, 2020, 03:29:42 pm »

I have bought a Graupner HMS Hood 1-150, now it came with four esc's one for each motor, now I was told I only needed two esc's one for the port two motors and one for the starboard two motors and to plug them into chanel 2 and chanel 3 on the receiver. Now my question is are my motors brushed or brushless, and are the esc's powerful enough, do I connect them as described, Ive heard of mixers and splitters but Im at a loss as what does what. Ideally Id like all motors to go forward and backward on one stick on the controller ( flysky 6). Any help would be greatly appreciated :), Steve.

1. Fit all four ESC, they can be easily reconfigured / rewired later,
2. Invest in a 4, 6+ channel radio, a computer type is best as you can configure 'any which way you can'..
3. Motors are brushed, only two wires ( Brushless have three).
4. Can you see if the ESCs have BEC or UBEC, if you, we need to talk to you about disconnecting the radio 'power' line!

Close up photo of the ESC please?

Hi Steve,

Have a look through this great article, search for BEC.

On these models check the current draw.
Simply changing the shaft grease can significantly reduce the motor current draw unless it has already been done.

I have found some info the motors are a speed 400 which has a amp draw of 10a, the Esc's I have are BDESC-S10E-RTR the spec is working voltage 6-12v, bec current 5v 2a, internal resistance 0.0076m ohm, continuous output current 3200a forward 160a backwards, cable type 16 awg. So are these man enough if I conect two motors to one esc ?

Those are al 'Chinese values' ( do a search here on Mayhem for "Chinese Amps" !!! ).
'Current 3200A forward 160A' - is enough power to run a Tesla car at 55mph.... with four people on-board!

NB: If a Speed400 motor is taking 10 Amps, you have a lot more to worry about than the speed of the boat... fires mainly!

Install all four ESC for now, ( surprised they didn't come pre-installed! ), easy to reconfigure afterwards, harder to install with hindsight....

Needless to say, fit fuses between ESC and motors.

has a picture of the ESC.  We can assume that the 3200amp figure is a typo from the 320 in the spec.  We can safely assume that the 320amp figure is a complete fabrication anyway.  It should be noted that the "waterproof" ESC has bare solder external contacts.  This effectively negates any claim to being waterproof.
Personally, I wouldn't touch one, but at the price, one ESC per motor.
Any Speed 400 drawing 10A in this type of boat is driving too much prop.  They are best replaced by something more appropriate like RS385s, which, on a model this size and with the right prop, should be drawing no more than about 3 amps each on 3S Lipo.  The spec claims that this is OK, but then.....
Generally, when driving one motor per ESC, the best plan is to let the ESC do the protecting, and have each ESC supplied by its own fuse between ESC and battery.  The time when having fuses between ESC and motor is god is when driving more than one motor from an ESC.

Hello Malcolm, I'm binning those Esc's, I spoke to Nick at Howes Models and he said the best thing to do is bin them, I'm getting two Mtroniks Viper Marine 25's and had a chat as how to best set it up. So I'm all good now 😊 just got to work out how best to put 4.5kgs of ballast into her hull now and the turret project 😂 Steve.

Make it 4kg of lead flashing well spread out in the bottom of the hull.  Allow plenty for the working turrets and watch out for the rearmost - Hood was known to get very wet there.

Malcolm,
From new they are packed with very thick grease.
On my Prinz Eugen from original she pulled well over 10+ amps on all 3 motors.
Regreased the shafts with thinner grease just over 3 amps total, in air.

Great advice Bob, when I put the new propellers on yesterday I removed the shafts and cleaned them up as this one has never been used. Put a lighter grease in and replaced them, turns by hand alot easier, will see what happens when I hook up the new Esc's  :-)  Steve.
