They can be depending what your after, brass and bronze stock is pricy, stainless is cheap and good for rust proof boat parts.
Aluminium is cheap but it marks so damn easy in the jaws,(a trick to stop marking is to wrap the part in a soda can)
A good source of cheaper stainless rods from 10-2mm is old printers, we recently updated our home printer ( has a £6 package attached for Cheap printing very good sub from HP saves u a fortune on cartridges)
Anyway took apart the wife old printer and got a ton of stainless rods from it.
Old hoovers tend to have a few rods in, basically old home machines out for the trash are worth stripping for variety.

eBay is a good place to also get stock won’t be free but not overly unreasonable, some places offer the multi buy discount.
I currently have parts stashed away from about 4 or 5 printers shafts, gears and of course screws and motors, plus i have a stash of 4 more printers waiting to be disassembled, currently i dont have a working printer, as my last colour laserjet broke and has been stripped, i ordered a new colour laserjet on next day delivery, that was two weeks ago, but it will be coming direct from the manufacturer so i guess they are either shut or out of stock as everyone sets up home offices, i could do with it for work as well as home use, but never mind it will arrive when it arrives

When I was building my base I looked at options for it, sheet of flat steel popped up, quartz, chunk of marble...

Yeah there is quite a list of things that make up a base.... the sheet of steel would have been my first choice, but to get the thickness/size needed would have cost me a child. Sometimes it just isn’t worth the price...
So I opted to cut out a chunk of work surface I had left over from doing the workshop, it’s solid as a rock can’t twist easy given it’s weight and size it’s also easy to drill for additional mounting points if needed. Best of all was free since it was an off cut...

Looking forward to your progress if it ever arrives in a timely fashion!

Yes my quartz is leftover from fitting my kitchen last year  :-))  very heavy for the size.

Scratching around the house shed loft I found some aluminium angle from when I fitted solar panels.
Handy as a ledge for bits n bobs

Ok, so my maths-based one-liner failed. Sorry about that.

Having just been and stared at it I now see your reference was to the figure 8  {-)
This refers to the cable end 2 pin connector  O0   {-)

It's been a week now since placing my order with Amazon. Still marked as not despatched. Phone help is a waste of space but at least my order has not been cancelled. Usually a long delay means they don't have it.

I can only imagine that there were other potential buyers watching for a low price listing and we all bought that morning. So maybe someone got one delivered.
I can do nothing more than wait and hope, after all it's a £270 saving

Looks like a poorly designed competitive piece when the unimat came out... doubt you can buy parts for it now, hence its price.. shame tho cos it looks almost new condition of the photos.

Normally amazon only take payment once item has been dispatched... usually...

Sometimes I’ve found they take payment right away, don’t send the item for 7-10 days by then the money’s returned to my account as it was only a flagged payment, then they retake the money at random....

Gotta love amazon and their weird ways!

I saw today Amazon in France have been banned for dispatching non-essential items at the moment. Not sure about other countries. You might need to watch for that. I stopped using Amazon 15 years ago so not sure what it's like these days but it mIght make them a little unreliable for some things if they're moving them into the UK.

We normally get most things delivered next day, this is my first negative experience BUT for a saving of £270 I’ll be forgiving  :-))

Still no progress on mine  :((

However these just arrived from China ordered on the same day 6th April  %%

A positionable handle for the tailstock. I bought four making them just over £1 each derivered. The more you buy the cheaper they are.

I had a long Amazon live chat today with two Amazon robots. The first suggested I buy the lathe again as the one I bought is not in stock. I said.... You want me to pay £1100 for something I already paid you £829 for?? call me stupid  {-)

Another fella took over and he has escalated the problem to the warehouse to expedite a dispatch within 48 hrs

This may involve them paying the other seller £1100 so they can fulfil my over 2 week old order.

An extract ....

We take full responsibility for the delay and I have escalated this to our Fulfilment Centre and asked them to dispatch the item to you as soon as they can. We've checked your order, and have found that "Proxxon Micromot PD 250/E Präzisionsdrehmaschine 230 V/50 Hz 24 002" has been delayed in the dispatch process. I’ve now escalated this to the fulfilment centre that is dispatching your goods to help solve the problem. We will attempt to dispatch your order within 48 hours. If for any reason you haven’t received a confirmation email within the next 7 days, please let us know by replying to this e-mail.When you place an order we provide you with a delivery estimate. Our inventory is constantly changing based on information we receive directly from our suppliers, and occasionally, unexpected fluctuations in supply can result in us being unable to fulfil an order on time. On very rare occasions there can be technical or stock availability issues that prevent us dispatching certain products to certain addresses. This can be due to the location of our remaining stock of the product and any special shipping requirements necessary. If there is a faster shipping method available when your order dispatches we will also automatically upgrade the parcel to help get it to you that bit sooner. When your order dispatches we'll send you an e-mail when we dispatch, confirming the new estimated delivery date, contents and method of delivery. We're sorry for any inconvenience this causes and hope to see you again soon.

Thats a very good result I hope that it turns up soon.  That'll teach Amazon so advertise sales that they don't actually have!
