Forecastle deck gear on a 1910 'ish steam trawler
« on: April 03, 2020, 07:52:10 pm »

Hi All,
The current project involves a pre-WW1 steam trawler. She has a raised (top-gallant) forecastle and the steam anchor windlass is below deck.
I'm trying to find out what, if any, type of windlass would be above the deck to aid handling of the mooring lines etc.
None of the drawings I have give any real indication and it's Murphy's Law that all the pics I've seen tend to either (1) show an anchor windlass because the chains are above deck or (2) nowt identifiable!
Any thoughts please?
Cheers
Tony

Anchor windlass only Tony , all the mooring lines were man handled on side trawlers right up to the end in the late 1980's

Thanks Mark but that's the sort that would suit the main anchor windlass, housed under the forecastle deck and effectively hidden on this particular type of trawler. The most it was ever going to have would be a small steam capstan (possibly a smaller version of the attached) but even that should be overkill! It would only be for the forward mooring lines which could be man handled.Unlike the tug, the main windlass (not the anchor one) was between the bridge and the fish hold and was mainly for handling the nets etc. Thanks againTony
