Boiler Testing
« on: April 06, 2020, 12:00:11 pm »

Hi all, I hope you can help.
I've been using the lock-down as an excuse to get back into boat modelling. I've recently started work on the Springer that I've been putting off for the past year or so... But that's another story.
I've always fancied a making a small scratch built steam launch. I'm a mechanical engineer by trade and made a prototype v-twin self starting oscillator about 25 years ago. The design was loosely based on the Marine Modelling Mabel article at the time. My intention is to build another specifically for this project and make a boiler to suit.

If I do manage to get the engine and boiler built, what regulations will I have to look our for with regards to boiler testing, etc? Part of my job involves high pressure hydraulic and pneumatic testing of valves, cylinders and pipework, so I'm familliar with the principles. But as newcomer, I'm not sure of the requirements for model boat boilers. I stumbled across a 2012 test procedure on the interwebs from the Model Engineering Liason Group but couldn't find anything official.

I do have a few clubs I can get to if that's the only way to get a certificate, but they're a bit of a hassle on public transport.

Any advice as to the testing requirements would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Paul.
