U.S.S Wisconsin Iowa Class Battleship 1/700 build
« on: April 16, 2020, 05:57:39 am »

Dear Folks,

Well, its been a while and I have not been slacking, just been into model airplanes for a time.  That is being interrupted in order for me to build a 1/700 scale model of the USS Wisconsin for a dear friend who actually served aboard that ship during WW2.  He is in his 90's and still sharp as a tac.  Just thought I'd give you folks the heads up that I will be posting the build.  The base kit will be from Trumpeter and I will be upscaling with various PE kits available.  Very small model.  With a hull length of just over 15", you can imagine how small the railings are, etc.  But, I will attempt to do her justice.  The model kit shows the ship as she was in 1991 (now a museum ship), so I will be tapping my friends memory in order to bring her back to 1944 vintage. We have already had some long discussions and I have started pulling in data off the internet, etc.  The only hitch is the long ship times due to our worldwide pandemic.  I should have everything to get started in another week.  In the mean time, I wish all of you safety and wellness.  We are mandated to shelter in place.  Its a good thing I have a great hobby to keep me sane.... sorta.
Best regards,  Dennis

Looking forward to your build Dennis......

I toured & walked upon Wisconsin's sister, BB63 during her visit to our Australian 75th Naval Celebrations - an amazing Iowa Class build

The image below is USS Missouri berthing at our Garden Island Naval Dockyard in 1986.......[I am one of those persons as shown on the wharf]

Well folks,  after over a month in shipping, my kit went back and forth between Hong Kong and Germany!!  Finally made it here, pretty beat up, but parts were in good shape.  I started the build and another kit arrives on my doorstep.  Nice.  Ok, I've been making good progress and am now beginning to add PE upscale parts, like aircraft crane and catapults.  Here are some pics to give you an idea.  I have never worked with 1/700 scale and we are talking very small parts.  Just about my limit.  Have to add that Trumpeter has done a fine job with casting, etc.

Aw that decking is beautiful Dennis! It adds so much compared with the old transposed cast in plank detail of earlier plastic kits.

I look forward to your updates  :-))

Thank you, the wood decks do add a nice touch to the model.  I just finished the build, except a couple of decals and touch up paint.  Pictures coming soon.  Dennis

Dear Folks,  I finished the model and finally got her installed in her case.  I presented the model to my friend, who is 94 yrs old and served aboard the Wisconsin in 1944.  He was pretty much speechless, but I know he was very pleased.  Sure made me feel good.  On to my next project, a very large model of the American Cup Challenger "J" yacht "Endeavour".  A plank of frame kit from Amati.  At the scale of 1:35, the model will be 48" long, over 9" beam and 5ft to top of mast.  My plan is to build her static, as a display model in our living room, mounted on a short wall, our ceilings are vaulted, so.... with full sails, she should make for a stunning display piece.  I will be posting the build as soon as I get the frames mounted to the keel.  Be safe and well.  Dennis
