New to the forum and the hobby
« on: May 30, 2020, 12:25:28 pm »

Hi all,

I have just ordered my first RC boat kit, New CAP Maquettes lobster boat.

Hopefully nice and simple for a first kit if I can get past the french instructions...

I have been into model building, model rails and RC car racing for many years, but the cars are all now gone and I fancy something a bit more sedate.

I am hopeful I can detail the kit up a bit from its standard form.

I am going to need a bit help from the forum, no idea about how to seal or paint boat! I should be fine with the electronics.

Kind regards

James

Welcome Jhock, I am sure you will find everything you need (and quite a bit you don't!) here on Mayhem.  If you haven't already found them, there are a couple of excellent lobster boat builds here and here.

Have fun!

Greg

I rather fear I have over compensated on the battery, a 3500mah NiMH...

Hello James, I've built the Marie Amelie, which is the same hull as yours but with the wheelhouse up for'd and a trawling gantry down aft.
I usually use a 2300m/amp,running a 385 brushed motor. ESC is the mtronics viper marine 15.

There's nowt wrong with using the battery you've got - just take it easy on the throttle.

Incidentally, it's a great little boat to sail - and with the flat transom she comes astern beautifully  :-))

Regards,
Ray.

Thanks Ray,

I have ordered the kit with same Mtroniks speedo and pretty standard servo.

I must admit I had thought about building the kit with the wheel house up front and building my own gantry.

I have to get my head round d building the hull first, all good fun.

On top of this I am helping my dad restore his old Graupner fireboat kit, we want to replace all the electronics with something much more modern, we are pretty sure he built it some time in the 70s.  I need to hunt down some replacement universal couplings as the ones in the kit had gone brittle.

Hi James, on a personal note, I didn't like the stickers that they supplied with the kit. I used them for a bit of guidance but only for the general shapes.
Cutting out the windows for the wheelhouse wasn't too difficult and I glazed them with a blue coloured acetate.  :-)

That's my plan too, use the stickers to cut out the windows and create some window frames from plasticard.

If I am feeling particularly creative I might use my other halves digital cutter to create the window frames.  I can scan the stickers and then get it to cut the window frames for me.

I did read elsewhere that the prop shaft supplied with the kit is not great and can go rusty?

Yeah, that can be a problem.
When I built mine I coated the propshaft with silicone grease which protects it nicely.
I still give it a good clean up and a fresh smear annually - it hasn't let me down in the 20 years I've been sailing it.

Ray.
