Saito T2DR running pressure
« on: April 17, 2020, 08:15:15 pm »

Hi any advice or personal experiences on the Saito T2DR would be most welcome in particular the pressures that you run them at? I am looking to install the Saito T2DR in my current build so advice re pipe sizes inlet and exhaust, or anything else to bear in mind would really be appreciated, thank you

Bonjour,
I have a certain number of steam machines of all kinds, including a T3DR and several friends has a T2DR and we operate at about 2-2,5 bar / 30-40 PSI.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDoBy5vrf70  or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqSbXOxCsX4 or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTvXNbivoaY
At this pressure, steam is wet, that lubricates a little bit the cylinders complementary to the oil and saves autonomy.
I have also several overheated plants but based on what i said previoulsy, I do not notice the difference ith normal heat, of course I insulate all my pipes.
Better, I operate this river 5 cm3 JMC plant tug boat at 20 bat/25 PSI : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RovmjIvfkTw
Our steam boats are very often over powered and too fast, they do not need higher pressure to my opinion.
Alwaus to my opinion, as a steam machine has torque and does not need to tun fast, the important thing is the choice of an appropriate propeller. For my 5 cm3, I usually add 2"75 steam pitch 4 blades Protean (ex Propshop) propellers.

Bonjour,
In addition, I would add that I almost always use a gas regulator so as not to exceed the operating pressure that I have chosen especially when I stop navigting for a while. The sound example of the day at 1,8 bar/ 25 PSI : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdCpKn2ppI0
The whistle is not mandatory, I'm just a big fan of it because it symbolizes steam and in addition it helps to quickly drop the pressure when necessary :-))

Raphael is right, Saito boilers operate at 2 bar, so one can assume the engine is fine at that pressure and even above a little.

Regarding pipe size,  the steam inlet is 4 mm. Since steam expands in the engine,  the outlet should ideally be larger,  like one 5 mm or two 4 mm pipes,  to avoid any restriction.
