Support for UK Model Boating suppliers
« on: April 20, 2020, 06:58:38 pm »

It would seem from posts on Mayhem and also from my own experience in placing orders recently that our UK model boating suppliers are being kept busy as a result of the lockdown with regular and new modellers taking on new projects.

I do hope that when all this is finally over that people remember and appreciate their efforts and don't immediately switch back to buying from China just to save a few quid. Our home suppliers are very valuable to us and I for one don't begrudge them a modest mark up for those items that they have to source from China and for which they provide a decent aftersales service.

I placed and received an order from Cornwall Model Boats recently - the products arrived, promptly, today, and I shall definitely be using them again. Along with, of course, my (not-so-local) model shop!

Many decades ago the slogan was "I'm backing Britain" - well, I've done so ever since and will continue to do so.
Our economy is going to need it!

Colin I have always supported UK suppliers and will continue to do so!  I have very strong opinions on this that would no doubt be moderated so won't say anything further.  Nothing changes for me on this, co-vid 19 or not.  I'll still fight the fight to keep our hobby available in the UK.

I can happily say that I am continuing to support UK model Boat suppliers, quality and service is unsurpassed....not that there are many alternatives on this side of the pond. O0

Just had my order from Steve at Modelboatbits delivered this morning. It took some time to get thru the postal bit, about 7 days!
He does live out in the sticks a bit I believe!

Well done Steve.

I'm awaiting some stuff from him too but it did say on the website that he is very busy, particularly with the items they manufacture themselves, so there could be a delay which is fair enough.

I think he did say his supplier of prop tubes and shafts was having problems filling his orders.

That's what I ordered, plus couplings, but I'm not in a desperate rush.

I must add SLEC to this topic. I had parts missing from a vintage model kit that was produced before
SLEC took over their company but they supplied me with the parts that were missing, and free of
charge they said they were very busy but the will see what they could do for me.
The parts arrived 2 days later. The staff were very helpful and friendly.
I for 1 will shop with them again. Also they have wide range of models and kits available.
Brilliant

Having spoken to model shops and on line traders in the area i live in business is booming. I have to agree with Colin when this over just think how the UK trades have rallied to keep us supplied in what ever form your hobbies take.

I to am find Postal times all over the place. I was speaking to My local post man about this.
It all depends were the item is being sent from in the UK. Some sorting offices are short staffed and post is piled up to the celling. Others have no probles at all. They are trying there hardest.
Just passing on what I have herad.

I've only ever used UK based businesses and will continue to do so.

I buy my fittings from J R Haynes or Deans as I like their products and not because of price. I am not flush but buy when I have the spare money cutting my cloth so to speak.

Where possible I scratchbuild and I design my own weapons
(usually when they are not available elsewhere)
and cast them up, though sometimes it is tempting just to order some  :-)

I like the knowledge that if there is anything wrong then I can get it sorted easier than with far east suppliers.

Just had an email (on Sunday!) from Steve at Modelboatbits to say my order has been dispatched. Knowing how busy he is that's top class service.
