Lovely kit/ I was looking through some old RCM&E magazines the other day and came across Bob Jeffries' two part build/review articles on it.

I built the Optimist back in the seventies, lovely model,  I seem to recall you had to buy the cast iron keel separately, it sailed very well even with my old McGregor one plus one , that's one stick and a button that moved the servo in increments with each push I used that channel for the main sail, can't remember what the actual cost of the kit was but it wasn't cheap.

From the review mentioned above it had an awkward design feature if I recall. The cabin had a one piece plastic roof which one opened to get at the radio gear and switches.  As designed in the kit, the mast went straight through the said roof meaning that without modification, you had to switch on first then completely rig the yacht. Bob Jeffries split the roof so the front was fixed around the mast while the rear removed to get at the gear.

Yes that's right I did the same mod and had a joint just behind the mast fairly simple job.

Hi
I have an Optimist that I refurbished about 2 years ago and it sails well.  The drawback with the Optimist is the keel.  The method of mounting of the keel to the hull is weak, only one nut on a very short screw.  Whoever built my Optimist added a glassfiber cloth bandage around the hull/keel joint, to stop the keel moving.  It was a very untidy mod and took a lot of filler to restore a reasonable line to the boat at that point.  I added an alloy plate to the inside of the hull to support the keel.  I would be happy to provide some photos.
