Engine Identification
« on: May 03, 2020, 11:12:24 pm »

Hi, can anyone identify this unfinished engine. It is unusual in that it has standards made from round rod and it has vertical round piston valves where the slide valves would usually be. Hoping to find plans so it can be finished. Thanks, Ian.

Is it a piston valve engine?

Yes it appears to have round piston valves vertically mounted up each side. I have a Saito piston valve engine but they are mounted horizontally along the top of the engine. I have never seen this configuration before.

Can you post an end view?
the engine does look familiar, but I can't put a name to it.

I think I may have plans for that style, it may take me a couple of days to find it.

I think I have narrowed it down to one of two engines;
TWIN-CYLINDER STEAM ENGINEBy Julius de Waal
https://www.modelengineeringwebsite.com/Twin-cylinder_steam_engine.html

The One I think it really is Steam Ahoy Twin Cylinder Steam Engine by Stan Bray.
I have found a photo copy of the instructions, but can not find a pdf of it.
I will try scanning  the photo copy I have, it may take a couple of days.
It was published in World of Model Engineering #5

Thank you for your efforts Gerald. The De Wal engine does look similar but different in the inlet and exhaust areas. I have had a drawing from the Stan Bray book sent to me but it is actually an MB 22 engine by Malcolm Beak and again similar but not the same although of course there may be other engines in his book. The search continues. Regards, Ian.

I have sent you a PM with a link to my dropbox where I have loaded scans of the Steam Ahoy, they were too large to upload here.

Thanks for all you efforts, that certainly looks like the strange little beast. I will see if anybody in out club has the Stan Bray book. It would be interesting to know if anyone has tried it in a boat. Thanks again, Ian,

Hi Ian,
It was published in World of Model Engineering #5, one of a series of Magazines that was published a while back. I may even have the start of one of them. I was given some parts which included the start of one, but the threads were all BA which I don't have any taps and dies. The fellow who gave me the parts had completed one and installed it in a 48" Launch which I built a horizontal boiler for. When I brought the Boiler to him he gave me some parts and material as well as paying for the boiler in cash.

Thanks again, I was able to download some but not all of the article in your drop box (probably my lack of compute skills) but hopefully a member of the boat club will be sending me a copy of the article. I actually have two of the engines, both finished to the same stage. I have an 8" x 3" (200 x 75) boiler sitting around which I was going to try with one engine but I might just give it a go with both engines depending on what the bore and stroke is. Thanks again for you efforts, regards, Ian.

Thanks very much to both, I have managed to download and print off the complete engine file. Now to get on to finishing the engines. I have a cunning plan that means my friend can have one engine if he machines both. Thanks again, Ian.
