Bob ross, "The Joy of Painting" -BBC4 19:00hrs
« on: May 04, 2020, 11:05:55 pm »

Anyone been watching "The Joy of Painting" being run on BBC4 at 7pm these days?  I remember him as a kid.  I was a bit of an artist before but my watercolours and books are still in the drawer.  I can't believe they're showing him again.  I always thought he was a bit of a wet lettuce, not my style of pics either.  But fair play, there's so much trash on these days I don't mind it for half an hour in the background.

I don't agree with him though "there's no such thing as a mistake, it's just a joyous occasion".  I was painting little details on the mini Fleet Tender tonight and every time I made a little slip, he seemed to time it perfectly with that -I was shouting at the TV -for flip sake Bob (expletive, expletive)!

LoL.

I might dig out my artist gear next week though, looks like BBC4 are going to run some form of drawing classes on TV.  It's been a while and I'm very rusty these days!

I remember watching his programmes about 10 years ago. Some techniques were interesting such as picking up a couple of shades on a brush to paint fence posts, trees etc.. Agree about his style of pics though, a bit like the pot boilers you see in shopping centres. I seem to remember his son doing some programmes too and he said pictures with pink in them sold better than others which was interesting. Like you I might dig out the paints but meantime will concentrate on the current build (Amati Fifie). Finally got the paintwork sorted so its now onwards and upwards - the deck that is😃

I used to love watching his programs on a Sunday morning while having breakfast.

I remember he would do a lovely painting and 5 minutes from the end of the program, put a big black line through it and you think, why did you do that! Then it all becomes a tree and looks perfect. I very nearly bought one of his painting kits as he did make it look easy..

Before my Dad passed away, he did a good few paintings in the style of bob ross, but with views of the island where he lived. I will put some photos on if anyone wants to see them

I always thought it was funny how bob would 'beat the devil out of it' referring to his paintbrush. Was he not one of the jackson 5?  Lol.

I did have all his shows taped on VHS, then I used to copy what he did while playing back the tapes and pausing them while I finished the section he'd just done, still have some of his paint etc laying about

I have watched a good number of his episodes over the years and always felt relaxed when watching. His sales style was so subtle but hard hitting! I like his work on sap green backgrounds best and like his huts/shacks least. I also agree that the 'huge tree' does sometimes obliterate some very nice bits he worked on before, and he often painted over a stunning bit of mountain!

Do put some paintings up Andy  :-))

His style was from military -he apparently spent long enough complying with procedures and got to a position he had to bark orders, he said never again which is quite admirable.

I wonder though, with a hair style like that how long he learned to pace his workbench fro the canvas?  I can't imagine that impressive afro didn't do an inadvertant smudge or smear on his canvases sometimes or often.  Maybe the backs of his sofas in his house were thick with oil paints.  LoL.

...Never the less, not my style of painting but very impressed to see him on relatively mainstream TV again, and recognised on the BBC because it was on PBS originally so I imagine he got naff-all payment for each original episode.  I think the BBC needs more of this type of show now, not churning out endless social media friendly guff, then an aftershow.  God rest Bob's soul, Nice to see him again!

Thanks for posting the Bob Ross topic.  Sat and watched most of it but I found it so relaxing that I fell asleep.   Just as well I am recording the series so I will see it again later.   Often wondered how he got the paint to blend until I saw the bit about liquid white.

Made my mum sit through an episode the other week.  She ended up on the phone giving a comentary to a friend.  Not convinced.

...I said wait a minute, he is 30s away from crafting a log cabin (regular as clockwork, 24ish mins into the show).

On goes the cabin!

...wait I said, the obligatory dead tree is coming up now (at about 26mins)

Had her in fits of laughter because he just started crafting the tree just as I finished the sentence.

That said I shouldn't knock him -it is a peaceful half hour watching and fair play to promote the hobby!  If a little predictable.
