Old time advert
« on: June 07, 2020, 12:55:26 pm »

Just been looking at an old Popular Mechanics (Nov 1953).  A small ad caught my eye.
Just wondering if anybody built one and lived to tell the tale.

There was a chap in my village who liked to build strange things but the nosiest and oddest was his scale pulse jet based on the V1 doodlebug engine! When he started it up you could hear it the other side of the village! He had it clamped on a very heavy bench - he dreaded to think what it would do if it broke loose!

If anybody fancies a browse, https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=JNwDAAAAMBAJ&source=gbs_all_issues_r&cad=1

or Popular Science,  https://books.google.co.uk/books/about/Popular_Science.html?id=Ok8XtrhowscC

Not just the articles, but the ads are a real eye-opener into a different world.

From the ad it looks like a large pulse jet they are planning to use. Apart from the noise which would ban you from the neighbourhood the fact that the tail pipe would glow from bright red to yellow  would make it lethal. The heat would probably melt the rear tire while running, they do appear to have  heat shield to try and protect the rider. Having seen and heard a model size running I wouldn't want to be anywhere near one that size.

We know of a man who supposedly fitted a rocket motor to his car.
He won the 1995 Darwin Award.....    https://darwinawards.com/darwin/darwin1995-04.html
