Billing Boulogne Etaples
« on: May 11, 2020, 11:09:46 pm »

I bought this only yesterday from Cornwall model boats for the modest sum of £163 considerably less than other outlets.
This will be delivered tomorrow by DPD at no additional cost. How good is that for a UK model shop  O0  Not like its my first purchase from CMB
https://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/Billing-Boats-Boulogne-Etaples-B534.html

Anyway this model caught my eye a number of times and a modeller on billing Facebook inspired me to follow his build so I think I will build mine quite soon. I don't envisage it being a very long build but more like my Lobster boat in the region of 6 weeks.
I will adopt some technique gained from the Lobster to improve this and probably go brushless with straight drive and no UJ crap  https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,62915.0.html

Hi. Sure you'll rocket through it. Good luck with DPD though! Super quick but they treat my parcels like footballs! 3/4 deliveries had to be claimed back and refunded the last 2 weeks! (All items but one were ordered with RM but seller changed to DPD after).

Honestly never had an issue with DPD Rich. I use the app and usually know to within the minute when I'll get a knock on the door. I got a ping from DPD about my parcel even before an email from CMB. Packaging needs to be robust enough to protect contents against all possibilities. Royal Mail seem to be saving my post for alternate days during Covid or until there is enough to make a trip worthwhile. My mail from Ireland is taking two weeks  %%

...I've had terrible problems with DPD this lock-down (they were OK before).  I go to great lengths to speify RM / Parcelforce then you get the message after dispatch its DPD.  You don't even get chance to inspect these days as DPD mark it as delivered as soon as you open the door and the smashed parcel is on the doorstep.  DPD are quoting 7 days+ delivery to me up in Inverness still but delivering almost next day, but personally I'd rather wait and get things intact, some things I ordered for my printer were one-offs aparenty so no good damaged, or rather if they can be used still, not paying for delivery damage!  Least they're not as bad as yodel/hermes!  They just steal stuff but report delivered so you never see them and no way f contact!!!  Neermind, it'll work out OK but if I ordered it I feel sure there would be another refund coming because of DPD.

BTW by CMB  I presume Cornwall Model Boats?  I always use regular mail with them.  It's always been faster than any courier.  I use them here and abroad to my apartment in France.

...anyhow, I apologise.  On with the build when you get it!

Step one, secure a workspace. After a whole hour of shuffling I managed it  :-))  Rotterdam will continue behind me.

A slow down now while a Raboesch maintenance free prop shaft arrives from CMB.

I've ordered the corresponding size as the existing length will work.
Also enquired with Simon about a 35mm 3 blade prop but most likely a 30mm will be more appropriate as more efficient than the plastic offering.

There will be no UJ in the drive but a solid 3mm to 4mm brass coupler. I will build the motor support under the motor while connected through. I have in stock a 28/30 920KV brushless which should suffice.

Maybe not obvious but I've glued the build support parts direct to my bench top with CA rather than a separate board. Being kitchen worktop anything attached with CA will chisel off with an Xacto blade no problem  :-)

Yes indeed
You helped me get it from Les, only took about three months  {-)
Other models came to the fore but I already started a build thread quite some time ago

That looks like a nice little boat Andy and with it being a Billings it should go together very nicely  :-))

Kit quality looks a big improvement over the one I gave up building 30 years ago !
I have a battered plastic fantastic all ready to go version should you need to refer to anything -
uses an oblong lead acid lying flat in the hull,
assumed it's a rip off the Billings - but without seeing them side by side to confirm?
Nice looking model, keep up the good work.

I have already encountered the first missing part  {-)  However the quality of the wood is excellent  O0

While awaiting the new prop shaft I have turned my attention to the rudder and there should be a brass socket to fit in the keel to seat the rudder shaft. Fortunately I have some brass tube in stock to avoid a delay.

Rudder assembly

F317 the missing part

I've ordered a 30mm 3 blade from Simon at PropShop this morning.

The prop shop make the best props by a long way.  Good choice because even when your model is sitting in its cradle it'll look good with one of them on

Not expensive either  :-)

Might be a while before the prop shaft arrives so cannot proceed in the normal fashion.
I've taken out material from the bulkheads to make them more battery & equipment friendly and fitted those that I can for now with main deck dry fitted to align them.

I then started on the trawl frame for want of a better description.

I started by glueing the assembled upright to my bench but then realised this won't work as they are not vertical on the deck but lean outwards.

So attention to the specific build drawing must be followed exactly

So I began the day with lots more filling and sanding and a final priming.

Then the postman dropped my Raboesch propshaft  :-)

So this meant I could glue the sections together and continue to align and mount the motor.

I used two steel rules to ensure the keel remained straight and dry fitted the deck for alignment

I deliberately left out bulkhead 2 as I felt sure the laser cut slot was too high.
So fitted this after the rest had hardened.

I was correct

Then the motor and I had to remove more bulkhead to an enable a straight connection.

I started the day by fixing the main deck in place

Then sanded most of the frames ready for planking.
At the bow I created a groove to help hold the ply skin

Time also spent making the winding drum

Some more work on the trawl frame
