E-Cigarette?
« on: May 14, 2020, 01:25:10 pm »

A pal has asked me to suggest a suitable brushless setup to replace a Merco 61 in an oldish Cigarette. I'm assuming it's the normal size for these which was about 40" but I know nowt about what would be likely to suit. It's not going to be used for racing.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Tony

It's worth having a search through this forum for installations in the various Fairey Marine boats, both the 30 plus inch models and the bigger ones. They'll give you some options to be starting from.

Hi Chas,Sorry about delay and thanks for the input. I've assumed the Merco would be about 1hp so I've got a fair idea of Kv and wattage but it's more a case of high revs/small prop or lower revs/bigger prop for this type of deepV hull, assuming similar type of prop profile. It seems that both schools of thought are in order.Tony

Just thinking out of the box for a moment. You say racing, is this class racing? If so there may be information about props on the racing websites for that class.
I don't know if there is, but just thinking.

Tony.....
OMRA ..offshore racing association ( www.omra.co.uk ) will give you all the info you need.   Back in the 70's   Cigarette and Surfury were to go to hulls / boats for model offshore racing .. using  high revving 60 and 90 racing engines.  I think that 22 , 26 cc petrol is the norm now ...

Many apologies if it's confusing but I suggested originally that it wasn't going to be used for racing :embarrassed: . It should be in the 800 watt area to equate with the Merco which is being moved out so should be fairly "sporting" but will not be used competitively.
Cheers

No need to apologise Tony, you did say so in your first post. I've found a thread I remembered that should help you. It's about a similar installation to the one you are considering, but its in a Fairey marine Huntsman.

If you're searching some more, most people seem to spell the company wrongly, Fairey without an e. That affects the results when you search.

Sorry Tony, my fault. I misread your original post.

Hi Tony H

My mate has a Fairey Spearfish 37" with a Hobbyking 3648-1450kv with a 100Amp ESC and 40mm 2 blade prop.
He start with a 5800mah 3S Lipo battery which gave the boat a good turn of speed.
After this he upgraded the battery to 4S and turn it into a rocket.

If you check out electric flight suppliers you can find the equivalent motor to replace a 61 glow, this is intended to turn the same propellor size as the glow.https://www.robotbirds.co.uk/motors/ripmax-quantum-motors/quantum-ii-61-brushless-motor.html

Thanks all for the input. I think I've got the gist of an idea now and will just wait until I've actually seen the offending boat. I don't even know whether it's a straight propshaft or a flexi one so I can't even tell how large a prop will fit. The best option seems to be a 35mm outrunner at about 800 watts with a Kv value subject to the prop size.
Thanks again and please keep safe (just in case I need to ask again!) :-))

I think there's been a bit of a mix-up with your request, as it sounds like you're discussing a model boat setup rather than e-cigarettes. For replacing a Merco 61 in a 40" model boat with a brushless setup, you'll want to consider a motor that can provide similar thrust and power output without overloading the model.

I think that was Tony's sense of humour!

And probably sorted a long time ago now!
