Marie-Morgane New CAP Maquettes Lobster boat build
« on: June 03, 2020, 11:18:01 pm »

I thought I had best start a build thread, this is my first RC boat build so any hints and tips will be most welcome!

Stan has already proved some invaluable information durring a very helpful phone call.

So my first evenings work has got me this far:

Scribed the deck planking and fitted the lip around the centre lift out section of the deck.

One issue I had to correct was a crack in the keel:

I am aware I am not following the order of the instructions,  but I just picked off a few easy jobs to start with.

Hi James, it's good to see you're making a start on the model.
I'll follow along and hope all goes well for your 1st build.  :-)

Ray.

I built this kit a few years ago. There are issues with it %)  If you are interested my build log is here https://www.thercmodelboatforum.com/t1286-la-marie-morgane

Thanks Barrie,

Very helpful, I think I might picked the wrong kit to start with...

From your blog:

Replace motor
Replace universal coupling
Replace siding material with 0.8mm ply?

I am tempted to rebuild the wheel house from plasticard to give it a more scale appearance, is plasticard suited to RC boats?

Stan recommends fibre glassing the hull inside also, which I am going to do.

HI Plastic card all the time for me easy to use and of course no sealing and sanding down. I have enclosed information on the 385 motor the one with with a black label comes with a mounting bracket.  https://www.mfacomodrills.com/pdfs/RE385.pdf  Your model is very similar to my old fishing boat in that it uses sheet material for the hull sides. If this was my model i would certainly resin the inside but i will leave that to you.

I think Stan has answered your queries.  :-))  Its not necessarily the wrong model, just will present a few more challenges  %)
Do check of the quality of the sides material. Yours may be OK. I normally use aircraft tissue instead of glass unless I need lots of extra strength. Also, Eze Kote instead of epoxy resin as its easier to use and clean up, but of course what you feel comfortable with.

I agree with Stan - plasticard every time, although having bought the kit it means extra expense.

A bit more progress this evening, again all out sequence.

The bow has been glued the the keel.

2 halves of the deck have been glued together.

I have started work the wheel house / bridge:

I am not a fan of the wooden parts supplied with the kit and hopefully this will give a more scale appearance, plus I can work with plasticard quite happily.  I would quite like to build and interior for it.

So that's any job that avoids building the hull...

That's a very neat job you've done on the wheelhouse so far. Personal touches can add a lot to a model.  O0

Plus fixing this:

I am guessing I will need to brace it with something to straighten the warp out?
