Viewed from Oz the situation over here must seem absolutely appalling.

Colin

Yes, it does, Colin, but not only in the UK, there's also Spain, Italy, Iran, and now Brazil, to name a few. We are very fortunate here, not just because of government actions, but also because of the geography. Australia is a vast country which, apart from the coastal fringe, is sparsely populated, making it very much easier to control the spread of a virus. The principal areas of infection were, predictably enough, in cities, or centres of high population density and once these areas were identified, decisive action was taken to deal with the virus. As I said earlier, these actions were successful, but that doesn't mean we should let our guard down, Covid-19 is still there.

On a personal note, my wife and I have resumed our weekly Wednesday night get togethers with a small group of friends at a little local sports club. It's all very controlled, we have to enter our names and contact numbers in a log on arrival, and, of course, hand sanitising and social distancing is mandatory. On the other hand, we haven't seen our daughter and her family in Brisbane since the pandemic started, as Queensland has not as yet re-opened its borders. July 10 has been mentioned as a possible date for that to happen, so we live in hope.

Peter in Scotland we are still only allowed to fraternise with ONE other household. My mum is going daft because all her friends gave up a few weeks ago and now meet and mix whatever on their regular meets as usual -maybe 8, 9 or 10 households again by now.  She's still, rightfully, staying separate according to the rules. We were treated with contempt here in the UK by our "leaders" who were supposed to set an example but showed to us all very publically and a clear message a few weeks ago that it didn't really matter in the end if you thought better all the time so why not just go out, mix, whatever?  In some respects I don't blame people for just giving up.  There is no such thing a a "righteous" or "civil responsibility" when it's not lead top-down like it may be in other countries.

It looks like Victoria is getting a second outbreak with 21 new infections Tuesday and 18 yesterday up from 4-5 a day.  A lot of them are returning travellers but a couple are from BLM demos.  >>:-(

One thing I omitted to mention is that our model boat club is up and running again, after 3 months in limbo courtesy of the virus. We do have to observe social distancing, but that's easy at the lakeside. Predictably though, our first club day was cut short due to weather >>:-( but we did manage a couple of hours.

We start tomorrow, Sunday, all standing 1.5 metres apart so we cannot huddle together to get warm in 13 degrees. {:-{

It's not too bad up here in the sub-tropics, Brian, yesterday ranged from 12 to 18, although there was low cloud and some light rain. The fire in the family room was very welcome.

We are, after all, 1600 km north of you.

It's the winter solstice today, longest day and shortest night of the year, and the temperature here has just reached 11C at 9am. The next ice age has just begun {-)

Peter.
Only if you live in the northern hemisphere.
Ohh! you are 1600 Km. further north than us.  Maybe that makes the difference.  :embarrassed:

11oC is not too bad. You still want the heating on a tickle, but opening the pits of hell for a boost is not necessary.

Today Wicksteed was busy and the Model Boat club had quite a good turn out and some new boats the club is observing social distancing, the result of the lockdown making maiden voyages. The sun was out and the park was busy with some heritage rides open and the burger van busy. On the downside Kettering is on the verge of a second lockdown due to the increase in C19 cases which may affect the parks takings.
