Do you paint the hull first or later
« on: July 05, 2020, 04:45:57 pm »

Hi

O.K I think I will be opening a can of worms here.
I am about to start on the Slipways AZIZ and the hull is a lot of red paint so for the first time I am going to paint the hull after I have cut out all the holes that need cutting out and the prop shafts ect have been fitted.

Do you think that this is a good Idea??

Personally I’ve always painted the hull after all running gear and holes have been fitted or cut as I would have thought that cutting holes and fitting the prop shafts would require touching up after fitment anyway. In my opinion better to do it all in one go than keep going back to touch up all the time. But that’s my opinion doesn’t always mean it right for everyone else.

I undercoat and rub down after fitting the running gear, but I leave the top coat until there is no need to handle the hull for detailing etc.  I usually find that I need another coat of undercoat and a rub down before final top coat.

Hi

Going by you reply's, I am now thinking like I said that after all the running gear ect has been fitted, the freeing ports have been cut out, I should fit the deck and bulwark stanchions, then when all work on the hull is finished I can now paint the hull.

As the AZIA has a lot of deck gear that needs fitting and is on the delicate side, I was thinking that I should paint the hull and deck before I started fitting all the deck fittings.

I would test fit the fittings but not attach them, then paint the hull/deck independently of the fittings. I’ve found that it gives a cleaner finish with less paint gathering around the bases of the fittings. It also means you can paint your fittings easier as you’ve got 360 deg access around them.

Depends whether it is a wood or 'plastic' hull. For wood I may well put a coat or 2 of EzyCoat on before drilling the holes. Then 3 or 4 coats afterwards, then the paint towards the end.

For a GRP or ABS hull then I will usually spray a coat of 'plastic' etch prime on a 'keyed' hull before doing the holes. Then a coat of normal primer after the holes. Then the proper paint on towards the end of the process.

Hi

Thank you all for you all for your comments, I will now go away and sit in a dark corner and think just how I will go about this.
