Coming home tomorrow. Glamping in a field by the sea when the weather is pants is just a waste of time. However the Boulogne Etaples got her maiden voyage  O0

I've been thinking about my rudder options and I think I've settled on a pair of size large brass stock units with 60mm sleeves and 70/75mm shafts. These have water seals too and the plan is to re model the large blade down to a suitable size and shape.

These were waiting for me this morning  :-))

13grams a pair

They cope with the 19,000 rpm plus of my jet drives so long as alignment is accurate.

Cheers David  :-)

First job was masking the motors as they are magnetic!! to put flats on the shafts.

Comments invited regarding my shaft angle  :}

I've taken it that the shallower the better. To go steeper requires shimming the motor bed.

Surely shallow angle is good - less force depressing the bow, more force pushing you along.  Looks perfect to me  :-))

Cheers Greg that is my line of thought also  :-))  I'm also thinking with an 8mm prop tube I'll gain nothing by fitting P brackets

My Dumas Chris Craft has a similar unsupported overhang of the prop tube at a slightly steeper angle than yours.  The kit instructions suggested gluing a triangle of wood in to support that overhang but I didn't and I've run the boat regularly for several years now without any ill effects.

Just out of interest, are the holes left by the pins in the planking any bother?  I have always shied away from doing something similar as I felt you could end up with a finish with measles.  Although I guess as there is a second planking to come, holes don't matter too much at the moment.

And hurry up - I expected you to be finished by now!   {-)

Hi Andy

My view is the shallower the shaft angle the better for the 1/10 version. They seem to dig in at the bow with a build that follows the plans. I think the steep angle lifts the stern, contributing to the bow digging in issues...

Also, the full size boat has two big V8s under the sundeck and the fuel tanks right at the stern, so my guess would be that the full size boat has most of its weight further aft than the models. Upshot is the steeper angle helps lift the stern on the full size boats.

Just my opinion.
Best regards
David.

Thank you for the support you two  :-))

Yes Greg all the nails on the first skin can be ignored. Holes in the mahogany I feel benefit from the extra fine nails I am using. I believe Mike applies soapy water that helps the holes disappear. Amati suggest mahogany sanding dust and adhesive. I'll see when I get that far.

Some items in the instructions show the use of nails where it's simply not necessary.
Example

These parts should not be glued as per instructions as they are too long.

Black line is cutting point

Better to trim it down to length before gluing

Thanks to an update from Mike I can be assured that by using the very fine brass pins that wetting the wood before sanding will make the holes disappear for the most part. The nails in the kit are quite THICK, I have not even opened the packet. I bought the thinnest 0.5mm from CMB. To members that's £1.56 per 100, I re use as many as possibly but some will be so badly bent they get binned. I ordered 200
Hope that helps  :-))

Agreed about the Amati supplied pins being too thick, I found too many were also of varying length, a few blunt tips and a few with heads that didn't fit the pin pusher...  I'm also going with the finer 0.5mm versions for the mahogany layer.

I'm thinking that the 'swiss cheese' technique of boat building also allows better access to the inside of the lime layer, and this will allow use of the little rare earth magnets to keep the planks tight / flush in place of clamps.

Magnets occurred to me also  :-))  but certainly it makes it easier to coat the inside of the planking with resin.

Have we any idea of the target weight required?

Good to know Stan, as recommended by ukmike  :-))

Reached the point of making decisions regarding the bow spot lights.
I've opted to start by sanding a taper into the housings.

Position and angle is pretty much up to the builders eye.

I've left enough wood that they still need sanding back for the planks

Earlier I alluded to using stock brass rudders and remodelling them to suit.

These are size large and have just enough thread length to fit the model.

Thats a time saver  :-))   Just a thought Andy is it a little short as it looks like half of the props driven water will just pass straight underneath it?

Mine is actually bigger.

Wow so it is!  They look so small and yet these boats handle so well but you wouldn't think it just looking at the rudders.

Hope you do David I'm getting David's Amati Riva build withdrawal symptoms  {-)   :-))

I made a decision here as something has changed since these photographs. According to them it only takes 6 side planks to reach the bow peak. On mine it took 7 so I say they were originally 8mm planks and now 7mm.

Anyway even then the builder ended up with these silly slivers of plank on the top edge.

I decided to use some square strips I had in stock to avoid those by fitting with 2 planks to go.

This way I finish on a full plank that I can trim back

I've also ordered a Proxxon delta sander.
