One more point tonight.
It wasn't too much concern on the first skin but I am being EXTRA careful with the lower edge of these transition planks as they form a spray rail on the forward third of the hull. Most I've seen obliterate this with sanding. If done carefully it is quite significant but won't be strong until varnished. It tapers out from the bow leading edge and back in as it approaches the straight section of hull.

Planking at the bow without a rabbit to guide you is very tricky to keep in a straight line. I reckon you’ve well and truly got that spot on it looks lovely. If you run out of mahogany drop me a PM with your dimensions and I’ll run some through the table saw for you

Thanks Mark and very kind of you  :-)

Yes I know my plane is face down  {-)

This is what I mean about the integral anti spray ridge, very subtle but I think potentially very important. I will sand this to exaggerate it further. This is not highlighted in the manual.

Morning Andy

Looking very good..!  And absolutely agree about the shape of the chine at the bow and the fact that it needs exaggerating a shade.  It needs to keep a really sharp edge and be big enough to separate the water coming off the V bow from sticking to the hull and continuing up.  As seen on too many YouTube videos...

Are you undercutting the planks to get them tight..?  And if you are are you using a machine or plane..?

Wish I understood what was being said in that Video 38...

And I won't mention the plane / table thing. Ooops, I mentioned it...

Have a good day.
David.

Good morning David
So far no undercutting necessary and any tiny gaps will fill with varnish
No need to be so neat at the bow either as it is all hidden or painted in the end but just got personal pleasure and skill practice from doing our best as I’m sure you will also.
No sanding yet so it should come alive when I do
I’m going to varnish the belly as soon as I’ve done that.

I've noticed that the piece of wood supplied to me for the rubbing strakes isn't mahogany. I think it's Walnut.

Hi Andy

Don't rely on the tiny gaps being  filled by the varnish, not unless they happen to be microscopic, which you wouldn't see anyway.

Sorry.

Mike.

Thanks Mike
I'm not too concerned on the underbelly.

Finished the last bits of bottom to begin the arduous sanding. Most taken off with the stanley blade scraper method.

Wow, if they're the dodgy coloured planks, they look pretty good when varnished..!

So what happens re the shafts...  That's the first coat of varnish on, when will you fit the shafts..?

I've been a bit busy in the full scale world...  And given in for calls to tidy up my bench by she who must be obeyed, so not a lot of build progress...

David.

They are the worst of colours and wavyness, likely be painted in the end.  Just waiting for a missing part then I'll connect everything up and resin the shafts in.  :-)

The first coat is very quickly soaking in.

Interestingly, all of the Riva wood Craftsman [Boat Builder, Cabinet Maker, Shipwright, Carpenter] wore white Overalls, the Electrical and Mechanical Trades appeared to all wear Grey? Overalls.....bit hard to tell in B&W  %)

I don't understand why anyone who paid a small fortune for a riva allowed it to fall into such a state of decay but hey ho. I expect they are very high maintenance

Today's progress

I'm just trying the soapy water trick on these stern planks to raise the grain

While I remember I'll rewind to this detail. I decided this arrowed is a weak spot despite having another skin to go on.
I used heavy gauge 25mm wide glass cloth and resin on the inside to reinforce. Also means there is no chance of sanding through so can round off as much as is pleasing to the eye.

My ESC's are totally waterproof so I'm not shy of where to locate them relative to possible drips.

I've just tested everything for fit with the batteries and made this ESC platform from the mass of leftover ply.
Also coated all the recent additions in dilute finishing resin.
The on/off switches for the ESC's will sit on the bed between the battery locations.

Looking very tidy, given the confines of that hull...

Great progress.

It's staying anyway  {-)

The grain confuses the camera but I've tried to capture it.

This is square Amati Walnut planed to a triangle glued flat to the hull bottom then planed along the side to flush it off. As the hull V gets steeper stern to bow the resulting chine has a nice gradual taper when flushed with the hull side. Aliphatic had no problem gluing to the sanded varnish.

Now I have to repeat  %%

The various Riva posts reminded me I'm sure I saw one before.  I think there was one at "Classic Remise" when I was in Berlin Autumn 2012.    Your comment on the chine spray rail seems obvious enough here.

...It was in museum condition, no doubt dusted with an ostrich feather every day -same as most of the cars there not stored in the glass cases.

Not sure if this pic helps you or any of the other builders. Strangely I only took one photo for some reason -probably more interested in the tens of millions of pounds worth of cars surrounding it!  It was somewhat "out of place".

Over the years there were several models in various shapes. My build is a 1970 Aquarama and the bow especially differs from others. On mine the spray rail crosses the water line and terminates much higher up the bow.
Cheers Rich  :-)

Ah yes you are right. And there is much more flair at the bow on your design. The one at Remise looks shorter also unless it's perspective. Pass the pic on if it's any use or inspiration though.  The colours are nice if nothing else.

Re: earlier post about the Riva in the barn -they probably cost a significant chunk of cash to store and run every year compared to buying.  You know what boat in real life stands for don't you?...

Break

Another
Thousand

...I shudder to think how much that one cost to store at remise.  The depot is used by oil sheks to store their "spare" toy lamborghinis and Ferraris in for that one or two days they happen to visit the city.  Saves cost of air transport each time apparently!

I should have the sides completed today, only six more planks.

My receiver is attached out of drips way with velcro
