Re: Andy's Amati Riva Aquarama build PIN PUSHER TIP
« Reply #225 on: August 02, 2020, 12:02:18 pm »

When I first bought this Amati pin pusher I was asked how I got on with it. The placement of the nail did not need to be accurate for our purposes BUT I have found that with 0.5mm pins that probably 1 in 3 bend or won't penetrate.

I find myself running short of nails despite probably ordering 400 at this point  %%  They are cheap tho.

So I've adopted a new approach that has solved the problem completely.

Pre drill as you go with .5 drill bit. This might seem a bit of a faff but in practice it is quicker.

As I approach fitting deck skins this is a good time to raise a question for other builders.
The manual skates around showing a picture of how this should look but construction steps lead you to this as pictured. I feel that the mismatch of levels should be sanded out.

I've always found pins to be a proper pain and they also leave a hole in the wood which sometimes stands out.  I gave up on them to be honest and just used clamps on the second planking.  Its less fiddly and no holes - I don't know if you found the same but I also found the pin pushers to be less than useless.  Lovely job on the second planking BTW this should be another special build when complete.

Thanks Mark
The .5mm holes will disappear if following Mike's tip of wetting with soapy water as it expands the wood and raises the grain. I allow to dry before sanding.

This hull has places where clamps are just not possible especially around the bow as they cannot grip and slide off.

Seems effective thank you Mike  :-)

Nail holes

Soapy water

Sanded when dry... no nail holes.

Repeat for final sanding.

First round of heavy sanding

Was going well until the deck plywood.

The ply has a white centre layer  >>:-(

Making it nigh impossible to blend in without it showing through.

Also a bit more effort in the laser cutting could have seen the grain at least running in the same direction

Making this stern piece to fit to the masking tape line would have been much better too

Not sure what to do at this stage.

Could you stain the middle layer before fitting to blend in a bit better.

Not really Joe there is no way to make stain white seeking only.
I'm thinking its rip it off and find good veneer  :((

The styrene strip in the kit will just about hide the deviant. Nothing I can do about the grains

Morning Andy

Just catching up...

The mismatched grain irritated me too, but I'd only seen it in the cabin foot well sides, some vertical and some horizontal grain.  Not really seen, so not a big problem, pity they've done same where it matters on the deck.

Re the stern ply to plank issue. If the trim can cover, that's got to be best option as it's least risk I'd have thought.  Another approach would be to use some ply offcut and set it into the problem area, and blend it... Big risk though as that ply can't take much blending or the light ply layer is exposed.

Not sure about that forward to side deck join either as I'm not at that point. I'd look at dry fitting the remaining parts in that area and see if it gets covered, whether it matters...

Best regards
David.

Hi David I did think about inlaying a strip but that I think would be a bigger risk as the deck ply is so thin as you said. The forward deck joint is very missmatched and on show so all one can do is make the best job of it as possible. I suspect after 10 coats of varnish the eye wont be drawn to them  {-)

I'm not happy with the styrene strip as a trim and will be looking for an alternative solution.

BTW FYI I'm almost finished planking and can confirm there is JUST enough, no spare! So be very careful to save the best pieces for where they are most important and use the crappy ones on the bottom.

If stuck CMB do sell 1.5x8x860 strips

Onwards ho  O0

I thought I'd turn to the rear hatch and decided that the two ply uprights needed filing or sanding flush.

The next part involved fitting mahogany side pieces but I immediately noticed that 8mm plank is not wide enough alone to leave enough material proud so thinking ahead of perhaps a vinyl strip in the centre I loose fitted a piece to act as a spacer before fixing the mahogany strips.

Then the deck starts off with an inlay strip either side before doing the lime wood border.

Meanwhile only one hull plank to fit and two on the stern. Approx water line shown.

Hi Andy I don’t think you’re issues are that bad really. The stern planking doesn’t look like it’s been bevelled so the more you sand the greater the gap becomes. Rub some PVA into the joint and sand it straight away while it’s wet. I reckon the small gap will disappear as that’s what I did. As for the ply I’d airbrush that mate. No one will ever know as it’s such a tiny area. Keep going it’ll be amazing  :-))

Just above the masking tape where you pointed out an issue. Looks like a gap in the photo and I guessed that was what you were talking about

No that's just unsanded because to sand any more off the ply to achieve the same level would reveal more white making it worse. That line will be covered with a trim eventually.  :-))

No problem thanks I'm over it now  {-)  but I want a better trim than the C section white styrene provided.

Steady away shaping these corner blocks careful to protect bits that definitely don't want sandpaper  %%

I continued with the corner block but without rounding the edge off yet until both sides are done.

Fitted the final plank

Fitted the decks

I guess tomorrow will be all sanding
