So despite planking the bow from the centre outwards to be symmetrical I still double checked and centre was not exactly centre !
Ignoring the base layer I fitted the parts equally.

This centre finding ruler as recently recommended by member RST (thanks Rich) is priceless for this as I check every couple of planks that this will work out equal.

I am making sure that I get two pieces out of every strip of wood!

Brilliant progress Andy. Looking very good indeed to me.

Not had too much time on my build recently, hope to make a start to the fore deck planking in next couple of days.

Liking that ruler...

Best regards
David.

Cheers David. The ruler really is the bees knees for this  :-))

Won't show until varnished but the mahogany strips are alternating light and dark as best as I can select from the stock

Good morning David. Last night I discovered there is not enough lime inlay by about 7 lengths.
At this point I have 9 mahogany strips and 2 lime in bits. I don't think I need 7 lengths but I do know I won't have enough.

This is either an Amati error or they have measured it in metres rather than number of strips. I certainly would not want to be joining scraps together to make up lengths required.
Best check what you have in your kit so you can get sorted.

I can get out of this hole because I found I have in stock some 1mmx5mm lime strip that I can split down the middle for the last few bits.

Thanks Mark. Just for effect but nothing like varnish will do, a wipe over with isopropanol

Very nice indeed.   :-))

Did you stretch the supplied inlay to complete the bow..?

No I found 1mmx5mm strip in my stock so I split that.
Cheers  :-)
So you'd best check what you have  :embarrassed:

I don't know if I said this earlier? but I never fancied this model one bit from pictures of finished examples.
Another forum member sewed a seed in my ear and having looked at other builds on here UkMike and David's it just roused the desire in me too.
Value for money in kit contents 10
Value of enjoyment 10
About 250 hrs spent so far as a retiree so expect a year part time to complete this so even more value.

EDIT I just hope it sails without catching fire  {-)

Maybe time for another all up weigh in tomorrow  :-))

Having made note of Mike's recommendation for these parts I have concluded that the parts supplied in three pieces in the current kit are not suitable to mount atop of the Sax boards the two cleat parts have a flat slab side made to suit the kit assembly instructions rather than a tapered edge.

Still I find that if fitted as per the manual they will sit too low and thus require too much material to be taken off the sax boards.

My personal solution is to fit a spacer beneath as a compromise, the sax boards will then be carefully mitred so the musetto looks like it is on top.

I began by filing the mating surfaces of the three parts before using CA so secure them as one.
I then marked the deck outline for the spacer

Some scrap deck

I am doing most of the pre shaping of the underside before assembling them as separate pieces.

So while glue is setting...

I'm looking at the styrene strip supplied for trim. I'd prefer a better option but so far fruitless.
Anyway assuming I end up painting this chrome the other issue was how to fix it.
As a trial I have bought stainless steel pins .59mm shaft and countersunk the pre drilled hole with the tip of a 2mm drill bit.

You've made that difficult task look very easy and they fit so well.  Why not make your own half round trim?  Get a piece of mahogany which is square and then make a scraper out of an old hacksaw blade to the required shape.  You only need a Dremel to do this and its quite easy with this wood.  You could do this as you more than have the skills.

Hi Andy, I have used something like this on a couple of my boats and it works well - stays stuck for a long time (so far!) and a much better chrome finish than any paint.

Lovely work on the Riva. I suspect sales of this kit have boomed.  You should be on commission!

Blummin Ek Greg Perfect  :-))  thank you.

Actually three people so far have posted they will buy the kit in my various sharings  O0
Glenn at CMB said they do sell out fast on these already. I envisage a price hike  %%  but not while Italy is on holiday  {-)

Personally the two other builds of ukmike and David made my mind up to buy one in the first place  O0

Meanwhile I tried the bow plates and only a little sanding of the hull required to close the tiny gap indicated.

I plan to attach with adhesive at the very end and use dummy screw heads.
Note there is a towing eye on these parts.

Lots of sanding there yet but I'm happy so far thank you  :-)

P.S. thanks for the tip! I'll save that one  8)

Someone on Facebook said I should drill all the holes before varnishing.
Nod approvingly then do it your own way  O0

Personally I disagree with their direction especially as possibly 10 coats are involved.

Surely the wood gets harder after varnishing and is less likely to splinter when drilling it. It's not like I haven't drilled a few already  {-)
I imagine drilling all the holes with perhaps two coats to go and this is my intention.

Going back to day one here is a picture where it is all Pete Tong. This is a big mistake by Amati misleading the modeller.

Without fitting a spacer under the nose piece  {-)   Also I think the nose piece is too big but I cannot change that.

Next up the dashboard surround. I'm not entirely happy with these parts and the lack of full frontal images in the book.

Amati completely avoid showing their builders effort here but following the instructions the parts look rubbish

My version with scrap wood
