Hafenschlepper-tug Hein Peba kits summer 2020
« on: July 05, 2020, 04:08:24 pm »

The summer project for 2020 will be the tug Hein scale 1/50 from Peba kits.
The content of the kit is outlined in the thread:

by SJG001.
As a headstart I’ve painted the main parts.

All paints are spray paints from Motip.
The red color is RAL 3002.
The yellow is RAL 1021.
The parts are primed with motip primer 10420.
The paint-scheme is inspired by ‘Maria’ from Mcloughlin & Son and Sturla most likely from Island.

Next step will be the driveline.
Drive line with 130 motors, ø4 mm brass sterntubes, brass bearings ø4/2 mm and steel propeller shafts ø2 mm.

A too tight fit.

The propeller shafts are a very thight fit into the bearings. In fact too thight. The shafts are machined flat in each end, and that has properly left small edges preventing the shafts from entering the bearings.
The shafts were treated with a small file, in order to fit in the bearings.

The bearings was soft soldered to the stern-tubes.
While soldering the shafts were inserted to the bearings to prevent miss-alignment.

Expanding.
The hole in the stern-tube support(s) had to be expanded with a 4mm drill.

3D-print.
To my understanding most of the parts are 3D printed.
The print appears to be very precise. The deck fits smoothly on the lower hull.
Another example is the stern-tube supports that fits perfectly into the hull.

Aperol SpritzFinally we had a summer-day in CPH and it was possible to move the 'wharf' outside.
This included a highly appriciated possibility to have the inevitable glass of Aperol Spritz.

It was time to install the steerable kort-nozzle's.As a nice feature the fitting for the link between the servo and the rudder-arm includes a lock-nut.

In order to prevent clutter in the steering mechanism, I had to bend the link-shaft.

Motors

In order for Hein to be able to go real slow, I've opted to use Mabuchi FF-130SH-11340 motors, instead of the supplied noname 130 motors.
The Mabuchi motors of this are running with a significant lower RPM, than the nonames, given the same voltage.
The specs are available here, https://product.mabuchi-motor.com/detail.html?id=26 , they are rated at 5700 rpm at 7V.

Propellers
The supplied propellers were very hard to fit. Each propeller has a 'printed hole' on the side.
You are expected to cut a M2 thread in the 'side' of the propellers perpendicular to the shaft-line.
At least that's what I assumed, there are no instructions regarding the fixture of the propellers.
I succeeded in cutting the thread(s) but when inserting the supplied Allan key pinol screw I ruined the thread(s).

Propellers continued

What to do? :o Luckily I had a spare pair of counter rotating Billing propellers. The Billings has a diameter of ø 20mm, that's a little bit smaller than the supplied propellers,
so they will fit in the kort nozzles.

The Billings has an internal M2 threading so I had to thread the shafts with external M2 threads.

A final photo-shot of the Billings inside the Kort nozzles, as seen they are not to big, but hopefully it will work out fine.

Another replacement

The supplied couplings seemed rather stiff so they were replaced by Robbe rubber couplings.http://www.hobby-lobby-modellbau.com/onlineshop/product_info.php/info/p1525_Robbe-Coupling-Tube----1-1386.html

Don't forget the M2 nut between the end of the shaft and the propeller, so they are 'Locked' in place

Thx. for the hint regarding the locknuts.  :-))
I think I have some M2 nuts somewhere.....

Today was time for the first 'on the water' test.
The rubber fender has just has been glued to the lower hull,
hence the klingfilm preventing surplus glue from gluing upper and lower hull together.

Rommel

It looks as if we have a Rommel look-alike onboard.

The Rommel figure originates from Tamiya | No. 32557 | 1:48.

The Tow-hook-post

I had a minor issue assembling the tow-hook-post.

It consists of:
the post - 3d print
the holder - a photo-etched part
the hook - 3d print

The post had a recess for the holder but it was too narrow.

After a file had been applied everything was ok.
