Straight pieces of 4mm 304 S/S rod
« on: July 05, 2020, 08:48:11 pm »

Hi.

Anyone know where I can get 2 x 450mm STRAIGHT pieces of the above.

I have bought several pieces from "Specialist", suppliers pointing out that it must be perfectly straight as it will be used for propeller shafts turning at up to 13000 RPM. and packed  so that it can't be bent in transit,

To this date absolutely none of that which I have received is in fact straight.
They all say the same," Well it was straight when we sent it, must get bent in the post".

Mike.

Hi

You could try this company https://www.albionhobbies.com just ask them for your local dealer.

Hi Mike,
Hobbies alwayshobbies.com in Raveningham stock Albion and they're not a million miles away from you and there are several steel stockholders in Yarmouth.
I've assumed the Anglia Models are no more {:-{

Thanks for the replies chaps.

You are quite right Tony.

Anglia Models have been closed and sold up for a month or two now.

Have checked with several steel stockholders locally but either they don't hold any a small as 4mm or you have to buy a full length of 6 mtrs

Albion don't do S/S rod and Always Hobbies don't keep it.

Hi Mike

Probably not what you want to do but I bought a Raboesch inner shaft, 450mm M4, via Cornwall Model Boats. I looked up the part No. from the Raboesch web-site and emailed CMB with it.

Another thought is Prop Shop as Simon makes prop shafts.

Blackgates is another firm that deals in S/S. Good model engineering store. I get my free cutting S/S stock from them.Nemesis

Thanks Nemesis, but it seems that Blackgates only sell S/S in Imperial sizes.

Mike...I understand your quandary

I think the tolerance standard you are wishing to attain is defined as the level of acceptable deflection between any two points, and not a unit of straightness

Any 450mm length of 4.0 mm diameter precision shaft material wizzing around @ 13,000 RPM if only supported at the extremes will  want to whip

AISI Grade 304 stainless steel does not have a particularly good resilience, or level of memory ......so any load deformation [however temporary] will not necessarily return to the original axis

Derek

PS.....does the original design have a [450mm shaft x the scale] in an unsupported format?] :o

Mike,

Derek has a point about whipping at that sort of length if there are only two bearings. You don't say if you are using a short tube with additional bearings to support the shaft.

Mike, as well as the point made in the above two posts, consider that 5/32 (3.97mm) ground silver steel with push fit 4mm bronze bearings is what you got from Raboesch, Graupner Robbe and some of the specialist UK model boat suppliers that make their own in a garage workshop.
I got slapped down for daring to give that information before.
You get this steel from many uk and Ebay suppliers. It is ground to the correct sizes to fit 4mm and larger diameter sleeve bearings.
Get googling and see images of the cylindrical tubes it is supplied in.

Hello all.

For those requiring technical details on my setup here it is ...

The actual length if the shaft is somewhat shorter than 450mm, nearer 400mm including threaded end for propeller

Externally.

P bracket rear to front of propeller hub 2mm.

P bracket front to carbon fibre shaft tube ball race 100mm.

Carbon fibre shaft tube 8mm O.D 6.5mm I.D. Which is unable to be deformed in any way.

Internally.

Shaft tube ball race face to motor coupling 70mm with 8mm inside coupling.

There is also an 8mm x 4mm thrust ball race 5mm before the shaft enters the coupling.

Hope that helps.

Mike.

Hi Mike

Yes, I did get one, as I wanted one longer than the one supplied with the complete prop shaft I'd bought, to suit a particular coupling that I wanted to use and then cut the shaft down to the length required.

With postage it was £14.50

Morning Mike and All

These are the 4mm shafts I'm using in a similarly supported arrangement (P Bracket, short tube with teflon bearings and a couple of ball races at the motor end) albeit a bit shorter.  The shafts seem pretty straight to me.  You could specifically request they ship in a tube to protect at that length...

Hi David.
I think the problem has been solved. A pair of shafts are on their way and should arrive tomorrow.
I was able to speak to their technical chap who assured me that they will be perfectly straight and packed properly. Only £1.57 each plus £6.00 next day delivery and they will take them back if I'm not happy with them.
It's a no brainer really.
Will be extending the shafts about 40mm as I think that they a too far away from the rudders.

BTW, don't forget that for cooling water to pass thru' your P bracket bearings it needs to get out as well as in, but it can't do that with a PTFE washer hard up against it. Just a thought.

The big Riva is now going back on the work bench due to the freshly Chromed windscreen also arriving tomorrow.
