Use of Neodymium magnets in model boats
« on: July 09, 2020, 08:17:48 pm »

HI This is for John 44. these are the magnets I use in my model building. I have used them in various applications holding down decks especially in plastic models. If you look at some of my models on mayhem you will see how they have been used. Please note these magnets must be treated with respect and you should read any any paper sent with them. And finally children under 16 must not play with them and over 16  must understand the risks and be supervised by an adult who has read and understands the warnings. Sorry pictures removed  should you need any more info please send me a pm

Stan. if you get them the wrong way round. >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( get right and  :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

Hi The pictures did not show how they are fixed and used in model building. The link below will take you to my Grand Banks build  look at pages 7/8

used these magnets for years. please do a
bit of research first on magnet strengths, as these can vary from fridges magnets to magnets for moving sheet metal around. also the variety of sizes is amazing, plus self adhesive ones! below is a decent link to explain everything.
ps the n52 strength with have your fingers if not careful!

We trialed some very small rare earth magnetic cores for transducer applications..... [3 diameter x 12mm long]........

[Very interesting.......it was physically impossible to longitudinally separate any 2 cores that had aligned themselves via the N to S poles]

All transport drivers collecting even the smallest plastic packet of the same had to sign an OH&S Document acknowledging the he/she did not have a heart Pacemaker embedded in their body... :o

The small plastic envelopes were an ideal size to slip into a shirt pocket......but with undesirable effects on the Pacemaker & dire consequences for the owner

I have been using 10 x 10mm ones to hold down my wheelhouses/cabins.
Setup in pairs(one on the boat and the other on the cabin).
Two sets up forward and one central at the stern.

I test lifted a 5 pound hull by the cabin !!!!

I have no experience of this but I have heard of them being used as driveline couplings (submarines?). Does anyone have any experience of this and is it practical for the rest of us?

I’ve used them on my HMS Invincible’s deck to hold it in place- however I will say that getting them the wrong way round is a real pain- I had a floating corner for ages trying to find out which magnet was the culprit! :D

I have been wondering about the best way to secure the superstructure on my Fifie model and this seems an ideal solution. Thanks for the heads up guys!

Driveline couplings (submarines), well is an interesting idea and maybe the coupling would only slip if the prop hit weed ???

yes, you can use them as drive line connections, also use as rudder elevator

This will work but you would need to make sure the magnet type is suitable. Most Nd magnets sold have the poles on their faces  so would just slip when turned. You would need a rectangular magnet with the poles on the ends to allow the opposite poles to line up and not slip whwhen moved.

If you use two magnets, not only do you have to get all the polarities correct, you also have to find a method of attaching them to the model which is stronger than the magnet %)  I find it better to use one magnet and some metal.

Hi Barriew I use magnet to magnet. I use super glue/epoxy/ Stabalit express. Never had any problems of them not staying in postion. The magnets in the picture are magnet to magnet fixed using super glue.

Stan,
I use smaller round ones. Yours have enough surface area to get a good adhesion.

Sorry to disagree with your comments  I have used smaller round magnets and never any problems.
