Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter hulls from Sarik hobbies ?
« on: July 16, 2020, 06:42:36 pm »

I'm interested in Bristol Channel Pilot Cutters and I noticed some fiber glass hulls in 1/15 scale are available at Sarik hobbies. I wonder if anyone has any experience with these hulls from Sarik hobbies. I wonder if they bought the Cutter hull moulds from Kingston Mouldings ?  Thanks in advance.

This is the hull plus set of plans I'm interested in :

I would like to see some pics of a finished model but I haven't found anything on the internet.

I've just received the 1/12 "Katie" hull I ordered :

https://www.sarikhobbies.com/product/katie-gaff-rig-pilot-cutter-by-david-alderton-set/

As far as I can tell the quality is excellent but it's really massive  :-)  :

My only regret is that I forgot to order the 13 ft boarding punt also available at Sarik hobbies.

Hi,
I have a Hilda2 in 1/12. It's decent hull, exept it leaks a bit but its easily repairable. Only two things bothered me: I didn't have proper glue for polyester and plans are much to be desired. If you dont know these boats in real life it gives you hard time building it properly.

Thanks for your response. I agree that the quality of the drawings is very disappointing indeed, especially those of "Katie". This is probably because this particular hull wasn't based on an existing vessel. It does, however,  look like Katie's hull was at least inspired by that of the Pilot Cutter "Breeze" Unfortunately, I haven't managed to find any exterior photos of "Breeze" after her restoration. These are the only pics I've managed to find :

I would appreciate pics from (old) build reports of rc Pilot Cutters, especially those with a glass fiber hull.

Looking at the hull, it would suit freelancing into Grand Banks fishing schooners and other period vessels (schooners, cutters, ketches, etc). It could be a useful platform for a range of historic sail model types, and other non-sail workboats, at different scales.
Just my 2c.

"Breeze" has a raked transom whereas most if not all "true" Pilot Cutters seem to have long counter sterns. In terms of available reference pics this doesn't make things easier. I must confess I also think the cutters with the long counter sterns are much more graceful.

Idea: go to YT and look for tally ho on sampson boat co. Leo is restoring over 100 years old cutter and making extremely good job of it. I think it may help you. As for my SW Collision I will try to make general boat of this splendid type of boats.

Thanks, I have already downloaded some pics of this replica. I started building a 1/30 vintage BB Cutter kit in May this year so I gained some insight into the various parts and rigging of a typical 19th century one :

I installed a steering servo and experimented with a bulb keel for this model but due to its small size it will never be a viable rc sailing boat. Flotation test, keel proved to be too light :

Nice build, and interesting one. Well nothing much you can do, exept build bigger one. Brits sure knew how to build them.

I also ordered the 1/15 Marguerite hull last week and today it has arrived.  Marguerite is more elegant, more representative of the typical Pilot Cutter and more manageable. Fortunately,  the drawings are much better than those of Katie, also there are lots of reference pics to be found on the internet, both of the original vessel and a replica. Contrary to the Katie hull,  the Marguerite one will definitely require a bulb keel. Some pics to show the differences between the two hulls :

As I am on fase designing the keel, How does  one know which type to use. Few days back I made lead ingots about 10X30 X400 mm and I am thinking of doing wet test/ deck and fitting, mast included/. But is there better way, btw I am not math inclined?

I'm a novice rc sailor so I can't really help you with your question. From what I've learned a boat model with a bulb keel usually has better sailing characteristics than one with internal ballast, especially of course in high winds. The smaller the model the greater the need for a bulb keel . A 1/10 or 1/12 Pilot Cutter could do without a bulb keel but one in  1/15 probably not. The obvious disadvantage of a bulb keel is that it cannot be used in shallow water and the risk of getting entangled in water plants is probably greater. I have been told that this Pilot Cutter probably doesn't have a bulb keel and it doesn't seem to respond too well to moderate gusts of wind :

As I don't know how strong the wind was, I can't tell much of her performance. But she is beautiful enough that her poor performance might be excused.

Indeed it's a stunning model. Of course one could also remove the topsail and jib if there's too much wind .

I’d be interested in hearing about how you got on building Katie, as I’ve just ordered a hull, which has now arrived.

Hi Andy, to tell the truth I got sidetracked by a 1/35 Italeri Schnellboot and a 1/15 Billing Boats Colin Archer kit. I think the Colin Archer model is a good preparation for the Katie one though in that it also has a rudder behind rather than under the hull.  This is an additional complication compared to the Marquerite hull.

I tested the CA model with a brushless motor and the rudder works well :

I have fitted the sails but I still have to install the servos to operate the sails.

Regards,

Arjan

edit: not clear to me why the letter size suddenly changed while I was typing this text.

Thanks
The Colin Archer looks stunning. Good luck with the servo for the sails.
Would be interested to hear how you intend to control the jibs, as it’s something I’m thinking about on the Katie.

Hope it sails well, although I’m not certain about the dress code of the crew !

Hi Andy, I'm going to try to copy this general winch setup :

I could definitely do with some help though, I will try to get some advice from fellow members of my local rc boating club. I hope you will post a report of your Katie build  :-) .

Arjan
