Sream Punk Fantasy
« on: July 26, 2020, 01:12:13 pm »

Hello all

Having completed a Milford Star and a CC Sentinel during lock-down I decided to build something on an absolute budget.
Languishing in the shed was a dusty HMS Polyphemus hull which I'd been given some years ago. I decided to put together a homage to the Fast Attack Craft of the late 19th century.

I raided my surplus to requirements bits and bobs drawers and after a couple of weeks have come up with this , basing ideas from Turbinia, my Seekadett launch and pictures of old French and Russian TBD's... Oh and the Bismark dazzle camouflage to break the mass of the hull up a bit.
All a complete fantasy and a bit of fun which has turned out as I wanted it to.
Built to around 1/35 scale ... as can be assessed from the temporary figure on the Conning tower... I've ordered a set if Finnish Tank Crew whose uniforms are a little more in keeping with the Steam Punk theme.
Just got to ballast it down and get in on the water when the Club reopens.

Oh I really like that Terry H. I love all things steampunk and I have one of these hulls to play with for a HMS Thunderchild of War of the Worlds fame. I may borrow some of your ideas to add to mine. :-))

Hello Martin

The actual colour is Wicks "Driftwood" from their wall and ceiling sample pots range... I did say I was building this for next to nothing and I found it in the shed! I thought it was a little different from the usual shades of Grey.
I might be wrong but didn't Mountbatten suggest a shade of pink for some  Naval Dazzle Camouflage

Some Special forces have a Pink shade on their Desert land vehicles, we certainly did in Saudi and Oman in the mid 80's.

Kind regards

Brilliant idea young sir . . . . .i was trying to find a hull for the same sort of idea only last week.  Does the hull need much power ?

Hello all

Thanks for the positive replies.

Great picture of the Desert Ranger Jeep... brings back memories !

Rob ...I'm not sure how the Hull will cut through the water as our local club isn't fully open yet and I've not tried it. Our rules say currently you have to book a slot and Form a queue while three members are social distancing at the pond side  for a 20 minute sail.
You might notice that as well as adding the two bow Torpedo tubes I slightly altered the bow angle to a more "wave piercing attitude". The centre of the hull is a bit bulbous as I believe HMS Polyphemus had Ballast tanks to lower its stance in the water when attacking. Whether this will make a difference I don't know.
The power in my model is just down to two MFA 500 brushed motors driving 50  mm props at 6 Volts... if its slow then I'll upgrade to 12 volts and see how it goes... I've not got into this Brushless lark yet!  If it creates a nice bow wave and cuts nicely then I'll be happy, I don't want it planing.

Kind regrards

All a bit "Penelope Pitstop" but given the right scenario a pink vehicle could literally disappear.
